I’m having strange eye problems. My vision goes weird with what feels like muscle spasms around my eyes. I’m on hydroxychloroquine and methotrexate so wondering if they are affecting my eyes. It’s been happening for a few weeks now and scares me

Hi,

Find an optician in your local area that takes part in The Primary Eyecare Assessment and Referral Service (PEARS) and make an urgent appointment under that scheme. It’s free. Explain all your problems/medical conditions and medications. They can refer you straight to your local eye hospital should they need to. They can carry out a Retina HCQ screen at the hospital.

Wishing you all the best

Hi I'm not sure where you stay but here in Scotland my optician does a routine Retina screen and comprehensive eye test. I'm on Hydroxychloriquine and have my eyes checked every 6 months although annually is recommended. I'm a bit paranoid as I do have a shadow around my vision often and have a loose muscle at the back of my eye which causes peripheral double vision. I think when my information markers are up and tired I have this. My eyes are fine though so make sure you have your eyes checked regularly! Good luck.

thank you for the reply. I will book an eye test. I have been very stressed and not sleeping well so that may be the problem x

I have my eyes tested every year with specsavers, but on my last visit to my reumy, he said cos I've been on Hydroxycloroquine for 10 yrs he wanted to refer me to the hospital optician to monitor me more closely! I had the test a few week ago and they said everything is fine.

But the last few days I've started getting a floater mainly in my left eye, it's very annoying!

I've had black specs in my eyes in the past, but this is like a lock of hair moving from left to right, or flickering on the left side of my eye!

I did have a bout of Bells Palsy a few yrs ago, and still get odd twitches around the eye!

Hi ask to be tested for sojrum syndrome it’s another autoimmune condition associated with Lupus it effects your eye sight and also gives you dry eyes dry mouth & skin. This could be what’s causing you problems with your eyes

Hope this helps if you need any more information just message me
