oxygen on flight advice sought

I have had lupus for many years. I have interstitial lung disease and had a small part of lung removed due to lung cancer. My lung stats are 52 pev. I would like to fly short haul later in the year. My rheumatologist has suggested I may struggle with cabin pressure. I don’t use oxygen or inhaler in normal life and am generally pretty well and active.

I have emailed the respiratory nurse but have received no reply.

Has anyone any advice? Should I order oxygen or is this not necessary for a two and a half hour flight.

Opinions please. Thankyou

Maybe ask question on a lung forum - this is just one - and you need to discuss with airline as well..

You will need to get in touch with the airline you are travelling with…..some airlines like BA & Virgin do have travel clinics…Basically they will need a fit to fly confirmation from either one of these clinics or your own doctor. They don,t provide Oxygen on request ….except the emergency type carried on all flights ……without full medical details.

You should start get all the details including your travel insurance sorted out well in advance.

Happy Holiday!

You should ask your consultant to refer you for a fit to fly assessment at the chest unit. It is a special lung function test. That will let you know if you need oxygen on the flight or not. Then you will be able to get a letter to give to the airline to get the oxygen.
