Teeth sensitivity at the dentist

I have been diagnosed with SLE Lupus for a year now.

Does anyone find their teeth really sensitive during ordinary dental treatment such as cleaning?

I’m also having a problem with the injections to numb the mouth not working . Is this Lupus related or is it just me? Any advice on the problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all xxx

Hi Chocolate1956 my teeth are sensitive since Saturday and I go to see the hygienist tomorrow , this happens when I have bouts of dry mouth , it’s just another present from Lupus xx

Yes, mine are very sensitive, I can’t tell if it’s just my age but dentist told me to use a toothpaste for sensitivity and don’t dip the brush with water before you brush, especially at night. When I’m at the dentist, I can’t face the spray they use for cleaning teeth, she has to do it manually. I have a very dry mouth but use the high fluoride toothpaste as well.

Gosh, are you my 'twin'! i am exactly the same, I have had sle for over 31 years but only last few years been so sensitive, really painful teeth and sore gums. Had a filling a year ago and it was so painful, I shook for 2 days after and now I am terrified to go and have my teeth looked at xx

Me too ! I’d not linked it to lupus & yet I’ve been diagnosed 26 years. I can’t tolerate having my teeth electronically scaled as I find it extremely uncomfortable. I always ask for hand scaling. Every time there’s a new hygienist I have to explain I can’t tolerate electric scaling . Some are super lovely about it but occasionally I’ve had others that seem to give a harrumph of disapproval but I just firmly & politely stick to my guns. I find my biggest problem is keeping my mouth open long enough & wife enough for the treatment.

I always find that few seconds at the beginning of an appointment explaining my fears pays off. It only takes a few seconds to explain but puts them in the picture.

Good luck with your appointment

thanks everyone, good to know it’s not just me. Think I need to find some help for this as going to the dentist is painful and nerve wracking and not going isn’t an option xxx

AHH I could have written this post! I've had one hygienist appointment and it took an hour and half because it was so painful having my teeth touched. I've had anaesthetic not work which resulted in the dentist putting too much in and paralysing my jaw shut! I hate going to the dentist and have been ignoring my tooth pain for the last 6 months.
