I’m a former Dental Nurse so know how troublesome & painful cold sores can be for people; they are also highly contagious and once you have the virus it is forever. They are high risk for dental professionals also, one nurse I worked with had one on her finger which completely destroyed her finger nail. Sometimes patients have to be rebooked if they one on their lip as stretching the mouth open can risk spreading the sore further for them.
My sister once had a very nasty one that spread from her lip all over one side of her face. Both my parents suffered with them as do I occasionally. Avoid kissing a baby or small child if you have one as they can easily contract the virus & then will have it for their entire lifetime.
Acyclovir is the go to in the Dental profession and I wouldn’t use anything else; It’s effective, tried & tested especially if it’s used when you feel that first ‘tingle’ of one starting. Sunlight can trigger them as can stress.
A dental surgeon could give you good, sound advice as they are experts in all aspects of oral problems and have up to date knowledge.
Hi , thank you so much for taking the time to explain the Dental side of things. Am so sorry that your sister has it also . It is a horrible virus which ever way you look at it. When you speak of acyclovir are you meaning valtrex or acyclovir even though they do the same function. Where I live the preferred medication is valtrex . When I visit my dentist I will try to get his input . Your suggestion is a great one and I appreciate it. Thank you ! Take care !
In the UK the Acyclovir I was referring to is Zovirax Cream, (the active ingredient being Acyclovir). It’s a tiny tube of cream specifically to put on cold sores which which can be bought over the counter without a prescription. Although a little expensive it is really effective and does last quite a while despite its diminutive size!
Apologies if I confused you in any way x
I suffer with Oral Lichen Planus and have had a lot of information from the renowned Texas A&M Dental School, (formerly Bayer Dental School), you may find some useful cold sore on there too.
