Last summer my GP prescribed a sunscreen called Sunsense. I found it very thick and difficult to apply. No matter how much I rubbed it in, there always seemed to be a tidemark of white. It also felt horrible on my skin, gloopy and thick. Can anyone recommend a sunscreen which rubs in easily and does the job, even better if it's something that a GP can prescribe. Many thanks in advance.

Roche posay is lovely .. factor 50 and 30 for face very hydrating . You can put make up on too if you need to as it sinks it lovely . I think the dr can perscribe . I’m sure someone on here will Send you a link of the ones available on perscription. X
Is it for sensitive skin by any chance? x
Yes a dermatologist told me about it when I was having really bad flare . It’s a godsend for me as my skin is so sensitive . The 30 is thinner but because I’m dry I prefer to the factor 50 . If you’re not that dry you could skip normal Moisturiser and use just the sunscreen xx
Hi Tiggywoos - I do like the Roche Posay products, so I'll get this and see how it goes. My GP made some comment at the time about not being able to prescribe anything other than the Sunsense. She said something about this being the only product on their 'permitted list'. At the time, i felt very ill and didn't have the energy to challenge this, or even to look into it, but I find it hard to believe that this can be true. I'm so cynical now about GPs that I think it more likely that they get paid some sort of bonus to prescribe that horrible muck. I wonder if anyone else has the knowledge to confirm whether GP's are only allowed to prescribe certain sunscreens?
You can buy it in boots often on 3 for 2 x
I use elta MD - American. I get it on Amazon after the heads up from a forum member. It's the only one that I don't react too at present. It is a sunscreen, zinc oxide UVA/UVB protection rather than an suncream. I think by their nature they are all a bit gloopy. I have never worn foundation etc so find anything other than a light moisturiser makes me feel like I'm ready for the stage (in my imagination of course). Still, it doesn't show. x
I've tried different sunscreen and my skin reacts to it. 😔However last summer I discovered rash vests from a member on this forum..so I wear a long sleeved rash vest under my clothing on the top half. Am looking for something like UV protected leggings that I can put under trousers if anyone has any ideas? 🌈😽😽Xx
I wear rash vests too which I purchased last year from next on line and I’m sure they had an all in one suit with long sleeves and legs, mind you not easy when you need the loo 😂💕
Just had a look if you Google rash trousers lots come up xx
Not on prescription that I am aware of, but I am a total convert to Heliocare - without alcohol and great for someone like me with rosacea as well as Lupus.
I’m using Altruist spf 50 and finding it really good, not gloopy and no white cast. La Roche Posay is also very good for daily use but quite pricey. I have discoid lupus so use it all year round. Altruist have their own website or can be found on Amazon.
Hi, I have discovered an Australian make called Solbari they make clothing and sunscreen, it is brilliant, ( I am no good at links but just put Solbari in a search engine) they have everything you need , including some brilliant hand coverings for driving and a face cream that I use every day. I also use Aveeno factor 70 ( get it on line). I wouldn't be able to go out of the house without these products but I don't get any if them on prescription
Hi
I was prescribed Sun sense factor 50 by my GP - it works, but loads of down sides. When applied it looks like clown makeup and the smell ? - wet towels? - very runny.
Anyway I’m using a factor 30 sunscreen and it works ok. If you find a better factor 50 let me know.

I use Ultrasun anti aging spf50 with a honey tint. One application a day. Leave for 10 minutes, then chuck all your normal stuff on if you're not too knackered by then. Ultrasun body factor 50, again once a day. I cheekily switch to the same routine in the Autumn and Winter, but with Ultrasun spf 30; it's my one woman protest against Lupus which makes me feel like I have some control. I still cover up though and last year I bought a couple of UV t-shirts online from Mountain Warehouse. I'm also lusting after a Solbari hat, but just trying to justify £40.00+ No matter what hat, they irritate my head. Then I feel guilty about giving so much thought to a very minor problem when the world is so awful at the moment. Namaste 🙏 🧘♀️❤
I buy Ultrasun, it goes on easily, M & S used to sell it, I will need to stock up again, it’s quite expensive but I have sensitive skin as well as discoid lupus.
I use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Factor 100. Expensive - but I use it just on exposed bits of skin on face chest and neck - keeping most of me covered up. What I like about it is that it is one application in the morning (although I repeat if I get sweaty), doesn't run into eyes, soaks in well and quite waterproof, and isn't over perfumed (I can't tolerate the scent of many sunscreens). Also matte not shiny.
Didn't Alida_Bennett put a list of prescription sun creams on here a week or so ago? I'm sure I kept it somewhere but, unsurprisingly, I can't find it. I'll have another look and get back if I find it.
Found it! The list that Alida posted:
As regards your question in relation to sunscreen, I have added below a list of sunscreens which can be prescribed via your doctor:
- LA Roche-Posay Anthelios®
- XL SPF 50+ Cream;
- Uvistat® Lipscreen SPF 50
- Uvistat® Suncream SPF 30 and 50
I hope the above is helpful, but if I can help further, do please let me know.
Kind regards
Alida
