Moderna booster?

Wondering if my us friends who got moderna are getting a third shot. My cardiologist suggested I should because I work in a school with unvaccinated children. If I had Pfizer it is approved by FDA but moderna studies are showing those who got the jabs this year are still showing 93% efficacy. I was fully vaccinated in the end of March.

Thoughts are appreciated.

Mmmm - but is that in healthy subjects or immunocompromised ones?

In the states immune compromised and over 65 patients are advised to get a third booster of Pfizer and Moderna but I am on no immune modifying drugs and under 65. Pfizer boosters are approved for all immune compromised patients plus all non compromised yet high risk patients(me), healthcare providers and school teachers(me).

However, moderna is not yet approved for these other groups. In the states anyone can just walk into a pharmacy and get a third shot it is available to all regardless of medical status and job but officially only approved by the FDA for those with certain qualifications .

If you aren't immunocompromised then the figure is probably applicable to you - but I never expect that here ;)

Hi Roarah. It’s confusing because the FDA and CDC have been contradicting each other for months. I’m aware as of this morning the new guidelines again! I’mIn the immunocompromised group. I’ve scheduled a telemedicine appointment with my GP to discuss this next week. I’m leaning to get the flu shot first and wait. But I will let you know what my GP says about it. As you work with children it sounds like a good idea to get a booster

At some point.

In washington state only immunocompromized people can get the thjrd shot. I had to show a proof. Where do you live? Im surprised you can get a third shot if not immunicompromized. I got it and had bad side effects (didnt have any with first 2 moderna vaccines...)

Hello. Was your question for me or Roarah?I’m in Louisiana. But I will be in your beautiful state next weekend. I’m fully

Vaccinated ( why do I feel like a farm animal saying that?) 😂 with phizer. I think I’d like to get flu shot before I go. Titters

I am in ct. I have lupus with aps but no immune suppressants at this time so technically I have an immune altering disease and qualify and I also qualify for a Pfizer jab by profession in my state. In ct the shots are given upon request no proof needed it seems. You can also get boosters if traveling to a country that requires one. I got my second moderna shot in early March so am at the seven month point so have a few weeks before my protection should wane.

Roarah you could also pay for an antibody test to see how many antibodies you have. I checked after the 2nd vaccine and had A LOT of antibodies. Im thinking that mine didnt wane and thats why I had such bad side effects. If I had to do it again I would do another test and probably do the third vaccine later.

The antibody tests are not really a great idea at this time for too many do not pass snuff in peer reviewed well run studies. Also antibodies matter less than t and B cell counts and those test are very pricey and hard to get. I think I am going to wait it out. Masks are used by all where I work and public mask wearing is also the norm here so likely safe waiting until it is decided by the fda. Thanks

Also i got the full dose (100) and i think for the booster they are preparing a 50mmg one) so better wait for that smaller dose

I also see talk of mixing the moderna booster with a flu shot in one and like that idea as well. Also if a variant occurs that can cause severe breakthrough disease the booster formula might be tweaked to better protect us. You make a great point and I think waiting is best.

I have been offered the Pfizer booster was suppose to have it last Wednesday but because l had my Flu jab the day before they would not let me have it told to go next week and have it as they like to leave it a week before giving it to me.

If I had Pfizer all my doctors would have recommended getting a booster now. Pfizer has one third the MRNA as moderna and the three week interval vs the five weeks May have also lessened Pfizer’s long term efficacy it seems. Moderna maintained 93 percent efficacy even six months after full vaccination. Pfizer dropped to 77%.

I have one specialist who says get the booster now and a few who say wait until Moderna data is reviewed. I am leaning to waiting.

So good to know cuz I was going to get flu shot first and wondering how long I had to wait for third shot.

I had Pfizer with no antibody response. Rheumatologist has advised me waiting until December to do a Moderna series. I thought I might do the Pfizer booster in October but I’m thinking I may just wait. Trying to work around Rituximab infusions and hopefully get the best result possible.

I was happy to get Pfizer but now I’m wishing I had gotten Moderna instead. I’m just anxious to get some antibodies here!

Got this today from my doctors explaining that moderna is only approved so far as a third shot to select people. It is not approved for a booster yet but ct is a self report state where patients decide if they want a third shot. The moderna third shot is really just for those with suppressed immunities not all immunocompromised people. I will wait til my group and vaccine is supported by FDA.ynhhs.org/patient-care/covi...

I have stage 4 kidney disease, APS, osteoarthritis, poly arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative bone disease, mitral valve has been replaced, (due to aps) I've put on weight, I can't walk that well... my bones hurt. So I'm clinically obese as well. Sjogrens and raynauds, AND more... my kidney's keep me off the RA meds, I'm not on dialysis yet... trying to stay off it as long as possible...

You qualify for the booster for certain if you had Pfizer and likely a third shot of moderna with the meds you need. Take care.

I had phizer, I'm not getting third shot right away. I'm waiting till about 6 months after my April 5th shot. Oh I guess that's next month!

In the US, Washington State. To my understanding the third shot for certain conditions and those on immunosuppressants is not a booster but what it takes to produce the response expected of two shots.

The boosters are for those fully vaccinated six (?) or more months ago for whom protection is waining. I expect that some people in this group may also get boosters six months after their third shot.

I got a third shot a few weeks ago because I was on Prednisone right before my first shot. Like you I work in close contact with unvaccinated children and I wanted my best shot of making it through the year as no one else in building seemed to be taking things seriously.

I'm glad I did. Every few days there's another group of kids or teachers out. I worry a lot less knowing I have the strongest protection the vaccine can offer.

Boosters are not approved yet for moderna recipients regardless of age, health , profession or when they were vaccinated like it has been approved for Pfizer recipients but your are correct third dose over either MRNA is for those with immune suppression drugs or HIV. I was fully vaccinated seven months ago but assume I am still covered just getting conflicting advice by multiple specialist what to do as a moderna person.
