I have SLE and have been trying to reduce my MTX and prednisolone doses, with some success. Our local health food store was suggesting a collagen supplement.
Has anyone heard of adding collagen powder to smoothies or sprinkling on cereal as an aid to building connective tissue? I bought some anyway, I guess it won’t hurt at the very least! I’d be grateful for thoughts on this.
Cheers to everyone. It’s a great site. 😊

Hello wallock. I’ve wondered the same thing. I’ve tried collagen in powder formAnd bone broth. I found good results at first. Then flaring and I could not ascertain
If this was due to the supplements. I have found that the bone broth and it’s high histamines flared me. Chicken stock is
Okay but I’m not sure it has same benefits.
Supplements are tricky I think. And as we have a collagen eating disease maybe why give it more to eat? Titters
Hi Betty. I’m not vegan so yes I tried the boiled up bones of pasture raised, noAntibiotics shreddded animals. I still like my metaphor. I have very little collagen in my feet, hands, face. Healthy tissue has been gobbled up like a little pac man inside me enjoying a feast. Glad you like your vegan diet. I like a great steak too. Best to you
Hi TittersIt’s actually vegan collagen although I’m not sure that would have the same benefits as animal collagen. I thought I would give it a go though. Any extra help while I am reducing my MTX and pred is welcome. What the reduction has done is a noticeable improvement in my brain fog and energy levels so I want to see how far I can go - currently on 12.5mg MTX down from 20mg.
Hi Betty321. Thanks for the advice. It is vegan collagen although I’m not sure if it would have the same benefits as animal collagen. I’m not normally one for supplements, preferring to get my nutrients from fresh produce. I just thought I would give it a go as it seems logical to me but I guess I’ll find out!All the best on your lupus journey. Wallock
Good morning. I wanted to ask you about your brain fog and MTX. I’ve been advised For 2 years to add it in my regimen. As I’m on low dose prednisone 3 mg day. Surely it’s the MTX causing brain fog? Also I will
Hi Wallock. You got me curious about trying collagen again. I looked at the veganOnes on Amazon. I can’t tolerate pea protein with my Hashimotos autoimmune
Thyroid disease. I’ve trie protein drinks so many times that are plant based. I react with brain fog and fatigue and swollen nodules on thyroid. So I’m going to try another bovine one. I’ll give it 2 weeks to
Hi I got it wrong. The collagen powder I’m taking is actually marine collagen. I have brittle nails and my hair loss is more than I would like so hoping it will help with that. I’ve only been taking it for a few days and so far no noticeable reaction. That’s a shame about the pea protein as I read it is a good one for Hashimotos.
My rheumatologist prefers me to come off Pred before I reduce MTX as he feels it’s worse in the long run. I’ve tried so many times to get off it, they’ve now advised me to try reducing MTX as I get so far then just flare. If you’re doing well on 3mg pred which is considered a low does, do you need to add MTX to the mix?
The one I have is none of those but is marine collagen not vegan, sorry. Who really knows if the link you shared is believable. I am a strong believer in a balanced fresh diet, grow a lot of our own organic veg. I only buy grass fed meat and organic chicken. However with some of the effects of the condition, I am willing to try something that may help my brittle nails and thinning hair. I don’t expect a miracle in regards to my wrinkles! Of course I may have fallen for the marketing spiel but will soon find them out and won’t buy again if I see no improvement. All the best.
