Aspirin as a blood thinner

Does anyone take long term aspirin as a blood thinner? Any experiences?

Hi Lily,

Yes, I take 1 aspirin daily on prescription as a prophylactic to angina and the occasional coronary artery spasm. I have been on it at least 2 years possibly longer (would have to check to be certain) and have no side effects. The only thing I notice is if I have a nose bleed or cut myself the bleed does last a bit longer than before I was on the aspirin.

I must add I take the enteric coated aspirin as I have suffered with gastritis caused by the Hydroxychloroquine I was on until I changed brands. Hope this helps. 🤗 Spotty

Hello - yes, I used to take 75mg daily for blood thinner up until a few years back, for the atrial fibrillation and aortic regurgitation/leaky aortic valve. I didn't find any difference in my life.. I've always had long bouts of nose bleeds which I thought was due to the aspirin but still have this for weeks when I'm flaring and have been able to cease the aspirin since having ablation. I always bruise easily but this has improved since taking more Vit C and increasing even more my fruit intake. So... not sure that is helpful but hope so! Take care/keep safe and as well as poss. Yes, I have taken low dose aspirin for many years. I have low intermittent anti-phospholipid antibodies. Many doctors prescribe it to reduce clot risk in people with aPL.

Low dose daily Aspirin should always be approved only by your physician. It's risk for the majority of the population far out weigh it's benefit.

Hi I took it for over 20 years for my APS now on different meds due to another health situ which meant I had to stop aspirin but it helped me for over 20 years .. I did ask for the coated ones to protect my stomach a bit ... I hope they help you too

Hello - I was prescribed it last year after a DVT (caused by untreated lupus, which is a whole other story) - 75mg once a day. I notice no difference in anything at all, except that it is yet another pill to remember to swallow.

Hi, I have been prescribed low dose aspirin for APS, (I have not had a thrombosis, I was diagnosed with APS after three miscarriages). I have been taking for more than a decade. 75mg enteric coated taken on alternate days. My rheumatologist said that the blood thinning effect of aspirin lasts for 2–3 days – this feels safer to me than taking every day.

As an SLE patient, I was prescribed aspirin as a precaution. No adverse effects I just bruise more easily.

I got a sudden blood clot in the lung in March. I was put on the blood thinner rivaroxaban but started throwing up blood. I was switched to dalteparin and now I’ve been on that for since then and still got 7 more weeks to go. I think my consultant will be putting me on warfarin next if i still need more treatment. I asked about the aspirin as I wanted to guess what my future treatments might look like to prevent more clots. The blood thinners have clashed with my carbamazepine so I don’t fancy being on them in the future. Thanks for asking.

I am on both warfarin with a target of 2-3 inr and 81 mg aspirin daily post multiple ischemic strokes later year. If I did not test persistently positive for antiphospholipid antibodies along with history of stroke I would be just on low dose aspirin as that is stroke protocol for the general public.

I assume they tested at presentation for Apls and if you were positive they will repeat. If you end up positive twice I would assume you will be trialed on long term warfarin. Howevrr. if you do not have apd they might decide for low dose aspirin but often with pe history, sans lupus or aps, blood thinners are not life long but just a few months. Good luck.

I have lupus and the menopause, so they could’ve been the culprits. Also anxiety or the fall I had when the corona virus became a big worry in our world. My doctors have no idea. Thanks for the info!
