I had them last year from May through to October . I found taking an antihistamine hay fever tablet daily helped to stop them. I did try stopping the antihistamine's a couple of times but within 24 hours the hives were back. It was only in October when it got a bit cooler that I was able to stop taking them. So far this year(fingers crossed) it has been ok.
I found the hay fever ones with Loratadine worked better than the ones containing cetirizine hydrochloride if that helps.
I had hives in October last year quite badly all over my body. I couldn't sleep at all and was completely miserable. I thought it was an anaphylactic reaction to a new medication as my lips were very swollen too. I was at the beginning of the process of being diagnosed with lupus and thought I had UCTD but a few months later was diagnosed with SLE.
After consulting the GP and pharmacist several times and taking antihistamines with no effect, I went to A&E as I was concerned about the swelling restricting my airways. I was given steroids and have only just managed to get off them. They worked to get on top of the hives but have recently seen a dermatologist who said he'd prefer they weren't used again. If they reappear he said to take antihistamines. Not the non-drowsy ones. I'm a bit worried as last time the antihistamines didn't help at all. I hope they work for you.
I've seen a bit about hives and SLE on the Johns Hopkins website which might be of interest: hopkinslupus.org/lupus-info...
Hi yes I get hives a lot - especially in the warmer weather - I take Pirition 4 times a day - these are the only ones that eases it -I’ve tried the 1 a day but they just don’t work for me - also I use Anthisan bite and sting cream which also really helps - best wishes x
The only time I had hives was a month after I started taking Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine). The hives were severe and everywhere. They went completely away a month after I stopped taking it.
