Baby wipes and skin

Anyone experienced a reaction with baby wipes or is it just that my skin is really sensitive during to my lupus profundus. I have raised red marks a scaling on my face and use a lot of make up to cover the worst bits. I found baby wipes the easiest way to remove the make up but now I think they may be annoying my skin even more.....cannot use soaps or anything perfumed.

Hiya 🤗

I have SCLE n was told baby wipes were a definite no-no!! They market them as being gentle enough for babies but that's misleading as far as us lupies r concerned!! If u already can't tolerate anything perfumed I should imagine that you've hit the nail on the head n babywipes r making your face worse!!

Although I have SCLE involving my skin I dont get rashes on my face so I can't recommend any alternative..hopefully someone will be along who can help u.

I use Dermol 500 lotion to clean n moisturise my skin..it's a soap substitute n I get it on prescription.

I suppose the best test is not to use baby wipes n see if your skin improves..then u will know for sure.

Take care 🌈😽😽xx

Hi. I also get a bad reaction to baby wipes used on my face. I now only use donkey milk soap - it's wonderful stuff!

I use to be fine with them but now leave us red raw, I use a Miceller water with a cotton pads, find this removes makeup a lot better too x

Hello . I do feel for you as I have scle and last year my face was horrendous! Like you I tried to cover the worst of it with make up ( best cover stick is good old Rimmel) and to remove it I used Garnier micellar water with cotton pads. I still use it even though at the moment I have no need for make up having not left the house for weeks. On the odd occasion I have used make up wipes and I found the Simple range is good. Aloe Vera soap works for me too but it is not easy to get in the UK. Really it is trial and error until you find something that works for you and it’s best not to experiment when you’re in the middle of a flare.

I agree with KrazyKat that Dermol is good, either as a moisturiser or a soap substitute, and on occasion I have used it on my face too with no ill effects.

Good luck and let us all know how things go.

Thanks for all your help and tips. I have contacted my GP and he prescribed Dermol500 to try. He said it will be trial and error till I find something just because my reaction is from under the skin.....anyways I will try anything to help it calm down.

Hi I have found that occasionally using the water wipe baby wipes are ok to use but most off the other brands have far too many chemicals in.

Baby wipes are not good for anyone's face, so definitely not if you are having a skin reaction already. A gentle micellar water (like bioderma) or oil cleanser (there's a hydrating fragrance free one from simple) would be much better for removing all your make up. You can then follow up with a nice gentle cleanser for a double cleanse (cerave or simple micellar gel are my favourites).

My skin is super sensitive and I I with lupus rashes as well as steroid induced rosacea. These products are all alcohol, SLS, fragrance and essential oil free for that reason.

I saw above you got some dermol500 prescribed. I've never used it on my face but I do use it for shaving which is definitely effective. I hope it helps and you get something to help your skin soon.

All the best xx

BTW, I don't wear face make-up (my face sweats too much, unfortunately) so I can't say donkey soap will take it off properly. But it's still an excellent product! It is trial and error, I agree.

Me also got tested yesterday because they said raised bumps can be the corona virus for lupus patients

OMG....I wouldn't know where to start with that one....it would be pick a bump....decide for yourself if its Lupus or Covid. I think stress has a lot to do with it too. Work are being bloody awkward with me, keep sending me to occupational health. 😒

I have just switched to reusable makeup removers. Special fabric - a bit ike E cloths only softer - removes makeup with just water. I'm finding shopping difficult because of shielding and not being able to go to the shops, so don't find it easy to get baby-wipe type removers. Decided to try these cloths, got them from Amazon, and am finding them marvellous, even for eye makeup. Of course they stop environmentally harmful waste too, and I no longer have to worry about supplies of the old style wipes.

Hey there MM -just wanted to add my bit to everyone else.

I only use non fragranced cleanser and toner by Boots. It's cheap and doesn't seem to hurt my sensitive/ex dry skin prone to rashes. But even that might be too much for you. Sounds like you have found a potential option and others find it ok which is great. So sorry you have this - not what you need with all this going on eh! I use the Eucerin brand for my body and face moisturisers.. the best in my opinion - for me anyway. Here is a link to their products for very sensitive skin.. cleanser too! eucerin.co.uk/products/hype... I get my Eucerin 10% urea lotion on prescription as I get through tons of the stuff. It has REALLY changed my body skin as I use it every day, sometimes more than once on my previously scaly legs.. No more shedding skin everywhere... after being plagued by that and rashes since birth. I note it says as a tip "Hypersensitive skin has a weakened barrier function with increased water loss so it is important to moisturise regularly." Definitely... and I use theirs too. Maybe use Simple Toner too? Really gentle.

One thing I would also add (and I've mentioned this tons of times on here in the past but it's so important) is to make sure you use fragrance free/non bio etc laundry detergent. Liquid. The best is the Boots Surcare option which you can order on line - or Ecover but it has a slight fragrance. Also- you need to make sure your washing machine is all clean inside (no clogged stuff in the detergent drawer - I use balls to put in the machine anyway) and not use too much detergent.. Also - make sure you are doing extra rinses... and., if need be, add extra water to the rinse via the drawer as a lot of machines don't use much water... so the detergent isn't washed off your clothes, towels, bedding - everything - and that means one is basically wearing/sleeping in/drying yourself with... detergent.. yikes.. this breaks down and irritates the skin. I had a dreadful experience with a new washing machine years ago - I didn't know what was going on, covered in rashes for weeks, then it broke down and the washing machine man said the reason there isn't much water in the rinse is the new machines are all "eco" and don't rinse properly - "which is why tons of kids are walking around with eczema and having to use nasty creams to calm the rashes". Ding dong! I realised what was going on and did what he suggested and added water to the rinse plus added an extra rinse cycle. Bingo... my rashes went within weeks. Anyway I'm sure you are up on all this but just wanted to check.

Also, I'm sure you are but drink lots of water all day too to help your skin/system keep hydrated - leuann33 and others are doing a test of drinking 2 litres of pure water (or herbal teas) for a week to see if it helps us sleep better (also limiting caffiene to pre midday) and even with that much water I am still thirsty much of the time due to the lupus and (probable sjogrens my rheumy thinks).

Anyway, I do hope some of this helps... and things improve. Keep safe... D x

Often cosmetics, soaps, baby wipes, lotions, shampoos, cleaning products and sunscreens will contain formaldehyde releasing chemicals as preservatives. Therefore, unless you know what these chemicals are, you won't know these products release formaldehyde. Best wishes Kevin

Hi Kevin

I googled what you said about formaldehyde, now that makes depressing reading eh. The fact that everything is hidden among other names. As if I was not shocked enough by what I was reading I then checked out sun cream ingredients....OMG. I'm off to lie in a dark room. 🙈

There are quite a few companies out there that make cosmetics and laundry products without the chemicals. They are reasonably priced. My daughter has found a good improvement, especially with clothes and bedding that’s next to your skin. If she is working away she takes her own sheets and towels to the hotel. For makeup she buys from Tropic. There are other good companies out there as well! The Tropic products are so popular her sister is now an agent!! Best wishes Kevin
