Anyone else struggle with night sweats? I never had a problem before. My partner is a human heater, but even in the middle of the summer I’ve never had any issues-I tend to run cold. But about 3 weeks ago I started getting horrible night sweats. It’s to the point that I wake up dripping in soaked bedding, and freezing BECAUSE I’m soaked, and I can’t get back to sleep. It’s getting worse and worse-this morning I woke up with a legitimate drenched body outline on my sheets, top and bottom sheet. I put some clothes on so I could hopefully get comfortable enough to get back to sleep. It worked for a bit, then shortly after I woke up in soaked clothes AND sheets. I’m at my wits end and even MORE tired than my usual fatigue now. Anyone else experienced this?
Night Sweats?: Anyone else struggle with night... - LUPUS UK
Night Sweats?
Hi SLE, I too suffer with night sweats , not as badly as you but similar. It can either be a flare of the lupus, or the change!. What lupus treatment are you on and coukd it be the change where treatment would be different?. I've also recently had the pneumonia jab and last year the flu jab and both times Ive flared and got this symptom. Have you?. My lupus treatment has changed as a result so don't put up with it as its horrible I know!. Could you ring your Rheumy nurse specially if your getting other symptoms with it?. Hope that's helpful and keep safe. Xx
Hi Ske22 - yes I had this during the peri and full on menopause. That's to be expected. Or if you are flaring - any other symptoms? I have had it another time for a while too. If it isn't the options I mentioned, have you any other symptoms? What is your weight like? x
Definitely not menopause related, I’m only 29. I was worrying I might be going into a flare, dealing with some reoccurring elbow rashes that are also new. I’m pretty petite, I weigh about 115-120 lbs, it fluctuates a little bit not much.
Thanks for the replies all! I’m only 29, and still on a fairly regular cycle, so no menopause concerns. I haven’t had any recent changes to meds or anything like that, and I’ve tried seriously cooling my room to no help 😔 it’s weird to me, because generally throughout the day I’m always cold, even in warmer weather. I hardly ever sweat, unless I’m exercising.
Yes! Have had them since my diagnosis. Changed my sheets at least once a week. I bought an Ooler which is a cooling cover for your mattress that allows you to control the temperature of your bed. I’m cold throughout the day but at night, I’m a furnace. I keep the Ooler at 17 C/63 F. Its the lowest it will go but it has helped me gain a good nights sleep finally.
Hi Ske, I, too, suffer with night sweats. December was the worst. But I would be freezing cold, then going really hot and clammy and sweaty. This was all day, everyday, in particular in the in evenings. In bed, I would be freezing cold. Hot water bottle am absolute must. But often wake up after a couple of hours sleep, dripping in sweat (as gross as that sounds!), so much so that I would have to change my pj top. It s been like that for months. Sometimes worse than others. The last few weeks the same.
I had a crash a month ago and had to get checked, temp was 39C, which they were not impressed about. Each ear kept giving different readings. I'm guessing it's because of SLE, but I have no idea. It was only that night at a+e with temp that it clicked and it made sense. I pieced it together with going from very hot, clammy and sweaty to freezing cold and shivering within two mins. No idea. Not on any meds for SLE as have no access to healthcare. On mirtazapine and neurologist has started me on proponal - which I have only been taking for two days. I just put it down as one of those things . Also get very vivid, very disturbing dreams. Again, no idea and only been in the last few months, mainly in Dec when I was trialling Zentiva brand of hydroxychloroquine, come to think of it, again, in Feb, when I restarted it - stopped due to effects to my eyes.
I’m so sorry to hear you’re struggling too. Did it seem like the nightmares came with your night sweats?
No, just scared and confused as to was going on with the dreams. Usually wake up soaked with sweat with no dream (or not remembering it). Second night of zero sleep now. Think propranolol is not for me!
Hope you night sweats don't last too long, not nice
Hi Ske, you should call someone to assess you. I would have said go in for an appointment, but that feels rather dangerous.
I remember when my night sweats just started, I really panicked, like out of my mind panicking. Two years down the line, still panicking but not as much.
I remember that I took a course of antibiotics, I had my blood work done, and I was very sure I had TB. Turns out it was just menopause. I am 25years old, the sweating started 2 years ago, my cycle is still somewhat regular but drying up very very slowly.
I use really light beddings, I tell myself that helps. But some nights I also have to get up, discard of my drenched clothes and sheets and put on different ones. I also have the sweating during the day, and any random moment. A few weeks ago I had to buy a new shirt from a store during lunch because the shirt I had worn to work was drenched. Now I try to wear multiple light clothes, so that when the sweating starts I can strip down to something very very light. Getting some air also helps.
I’m so sorry to hear, I can’t imagine struggling during the day too!
It gets better with time, the frequency and severity of the episodes start to slowly reduce. And it is menopause so an end is definitely in sight, tho said end is taking its sweet time.
I still do think you need to assessed, and I hope you really do. Because this could be caused by a number of different things, even am infection, or hormonal issues besides menopause. Better to rule out such stuff
Hi ske22, i used to get them pretty much every night and it was at the point where the bed covers and pyjamas were absolutely drenched. I asked my consultant and due to the fact my lupus was affecting my kidneys again he said this was a common side effect. Believe it or not I woke up last week during the night a little sweaty for the first time since I ended up on dialysis which was last December.
I’m glad you got some answers, but I’m sorry to hear about dialysis.
I found that having a small table top fan on my bedside table directed on my head actually works very well. Get one that is not too noisy though as your partner may complain!
Also lay on a large bath sheet to help absorb the sweat.
I am still getting hot flushes during the day even though I am 66 and thought I was past all that!
I do not wish to alarm you but if you are not getting any relief I would seek the doctor's advice, you may need to have blood tests to find the cause or it could mean trying different medications.
Did you FEEL hot during the night? I only ever wake up freezing and drenched, but I never feel hot.
I did feel hot and sticky which woke me up through the night but on getting out of bed for the inevitable loo trip I became very cold due to the wet nightie.
My husband said he suffered too as I would fling the duvet over him so he had double weight!
I found it a lot better with the fan cooling my head and also when my husband went in the spare bedroom as sharing a bed with him was like laying next to a radiator.
I only wear cotton nighties now as they are more absorbent and I can fling a leg out to get cool. You can also buy cool gel pads if you do get too hot.
Hope you manage to get sorted out, it really is debilitating when you cannot sleep without interruption.
My night sweats were down to Lupus. Waking up wet through and showering at 2 in the morning, needing dry nightwear. I was tested for menopausal signs but that came back normal.
Getting a diagnosis of mild SLE and the right medication (Plaquenil) the sweats eased and I rarely get them any more. Might be a good idea to call your gp and have a word.
I have this problem on and off and have put it down to lupus as it has gone on for years since my 20s and there seems no other explanation. Like many others have said, lying on a bath towel is a good idea as you can remove it quickly and wipe yourself down with the remaining dry bits before going back to sleep in a now fairly dry bed. It's a good idea to have clean pjs on hand so you can change quickly before you've woken up too much to go back to sleep! It may seem odd, but I also find that having an electric blanket to put on if you get cold afterwards is a good idea in winter.
Hello
Before my diagnosis and until my lupus was medicated, I suffered from night sweats. I'd never had them before. Although mine were not as extreme as yours, by the sounds of it. I was so fatigued but sleep was awful! I was dreaming a lot, (I never remember dreaming usually) restless, fidgeting all night, awake a lot and night sweats. In the mornings I would be so tired, dizzy and then gag brushing my teeth. I had a temp very often of 37.8 - so a low grade fever. I'd always felt cold in bed and worn socks because of my freezing feet but not at this time. And the fatigue and the brain fog just got worse and I thought I was going mad!!! It's a downward spiral. This all calmed down when my lupus was medicated properly. Of course the fatigue never 100% goes, but it did improve so that most of the time I can function day to day now.
I recently had another episode of night sweats, but I am 45 now and it may well be the start of the menopause now. My Mum's menopause was very bad. She always had to change her nightwear in the middle of the night and wash her sheets every day. She would sleep with her large bedroom window open, even in the winter. I am hoping this wont be me too!!!
Some of these random lupus symptoms are never fully understood or explained either. We don't always get answers. It's frustrating but I think par for the course with us lupies at times.
Could you be experiencing a flare up of your lupus?
Wendy
I'm going through them to I think it's because the world is changing .at night was thinking about it without even really knowing having dreams and then wake up sweating don't remember my dreams but I know they're about the world in the way it is changing
Ske22, sorry you are dealing with those nasty sweats. I’ve struggled with menopause sweats for 4 years and don’t remember much of my hotness over my 35+ years of lupus but I was taken off all my meds during this time and only on heart pills for kidneys now. But what I wanted to mention is that I stopped alcohol and caffeine due to the flashes and it made a difference within a day they weren’t as intense. I get a bad pressure headache when I get them so if it helps then I’m all for it. I recently switched to decaf tea and bought one regular by accident and the flashes came back with a vengeance.. couldn’t hurt trying. I’ve always drank caffeine beverages and now I can’t indulge too often. Good luck stay dry😩
That’s a great suggestion. I definitely do drink coffee, so I might try switching to decaf! Thanks! Menopause has come up quite a few times, I’m wondering if early onset of menopause could be another symptom? I’m only 29, so that would be VERY early.
I had nights sweats for along time. They stopped when I was given medicine for my stomach. After about a week the sweats stopped. I remember waking up soaked and freezing having to get changed. I had to take 40mgs of Ezomaprazol morning and night.
