Grey Hair, Help!!

Hi all,

Hope you are all well and keeping safe. Just wanted to ask for some advice and help, I have been experiencing for the past couple of months lots of streaks of grey hair on top of my head and slightly at the sides. Now I’m not no medical profession but I’m not sure its normal at 25. I have been on Hydroxychloroquine, Mirabegron, Aspirin, Omeprazole, Sertraline, Salbutamol and Flucatasone since 2012. So, nothing new or nothing I haven’t had before, I do experience some form of anxiety which is quite bad so do take occasional Diazepam. I just wondered if this was Lupus related and am experiencing a hair follicle problem or medication related. The GP didn’t help much either his response was it may be medication but if it is you can’t come of the medication because of Lupus. So that was a great help, NOT!! Any advice or help appreciated I have attached a picture of the grey streaks below so you can see what I mean.

Those aren't streaks, the are the odd grey hair - I had my first grey hairs at 14, my younger daughter at 17. By the time I was 30 I was more than 25% grey and started to colour my hair. By 40 I was probably well over 70% grey - and stopped colouring it, I had been a reddish brunette and the roots showed after a few days. Since then I have just left it - and am often complimented. There is no rule about what age you start to go grey and it varies even within families. My mother was grey at 21, my brother and my older daughter were much older. Luck of the draw I fear.

That looks perfectly normal to me I'm afraid!

Ahh ok Its just the Hydroxychloquine says in its side effects section that it can cause white hair/grey hair. It's been progressing over some time and only slightly gotten worse over the couple of months.

Thanks Anyway

Almost certainly the med. (hydro) I was on this in my early teens and hair didn't just turn grey but a LOT came out. Grew back but was grey. I started colouring then and I am 80 now and still colouring! Looks like no change in what side effects meds have. Carry on colouring - lots available now

Aww thanks yeah I was always informed it can turn hair grey/white. I'm very reluctant to continue colouring as over time I fear this damages hair. I'm really glad you can shed some light on this.

Can assure you no damage after 64 years of colouring, many shades including vivacious violet and fiery red and have been using permanent dyes for most of these years, just choose what shade you think will suit and off you go. (remember to do a test first and not just for safety) I have had some disasters

Hey there - well................... I am a lover of vitamins.... always have been since younger than you... but started going grey around 30. I remember PABA is supposed to help so just did a google... and found "Vitamin B-6 and B-12 are two of the Complex-B vitamins that aid in healthy skin and hair. B-6 may help restore hair to its original color following an illness or deficiency. Para-Amino benzoic Acid (PABA) and Pantothenic Acid are part of the family of B-complex vitamins." Maybe check with your clinicians if ok to take - and give it a go? Good luck. Stay safe/well as possible. D

Don't worry about grey hair, we all start to get greys at some point. It aged 20 for me, for the odd grey hair, about 25% grey by 24 and 50-60% grey by 27 (as told by the hairdresser) when I gave in and started dying it. Haven't dyed it since last February, as since March 2019 I have been living day by day or hour by hour due to life circumstances. It was October 2019, I was diagnosed with SLE.

Gey is just part of life, don't worry about it.

It's easily said than done, my best asset is my hair. It sounds so selfish but I suffer extremely bad physical symptoms of anxiety and this creates that for me knowing I can see it. The fact it has become more apparent recently is also a problem. This never happened with any of my female relatives before my time as my mum and gran have said. I have started sertraline recently and the grey seems to be more apparent and pretending along with stress I believe It may be linked plus Hydroxchlorquine produces white/grey hair.

Many thanks for your reply!!

Aww, I know what you mean, it’s a bit of a worry when your hair starts to grey when you’re still young. My sister and myself started to go grey at an early age. My mum put it down to genes on my dads side. And then the same thing happened to my daughter when she was 18. At the time it didn’t help knowing that it could be the genes. It doesn’t help when your hair is dark as it’s more noticeable. I went to a hairdresser for advice and we discussed dying it. It helped my confidence and I began to colour it myself, gradually going lighter with age. Now at sixty odd I’m completely blonde 😂 and over the years when people began to notice the colour change they actually complimented and said it suited me, my daughter who is in her thirty’s has done the same and is completely blonde too. I can honestly say no one ever mentioned my grey hairs it was just me knowing they were there.

Hi ..your hair looks thick and dark..like mine was...but I started to get grey hair before I was 20 ..over the years I put colour rinses on but it was inevitable that I was going grey .by the time I was 30 I was completely silver but now embrace it..don’t fret over a few grey hairs x

Hi danielle2419,

I am in my 30s,got diagnosed with SLE with vesculities a year back. Am on HCQS, wyslone and MME. Definitely, I too have experienced sudden increase in my grays. Initially, I too was too concerned about it but hair dyes was never my choice because I am totally against chemicals. Recently, I came across an article that talked about women from all age groups across the globe accepting their natural skin colour, body type and hair colour with full confidence and grace. The only concern was to stay fit and healthy. I got very motivated with it and have started flaunting my grays with pride. I definitely take care of my hair quality and texture. But no chemical dyes for me.i might try heena, the natural hair dye that gives a dark brown or coffee brown color, at some point of time.

Moreover, this SLE thing has taught me to accept and love myself, the way I am, without comparing myself with others. 😁

Now, it's upto you how you want to see and feel yourself. All the best.
