I have both lupus and Hashimoto's (caused by antibodies attacking the thyroid and lowering the inability to produce thyroid hormones).

My best advice is to remember that lupus is an autoimmune disorder where the body attacks itself. And that immune system overactivity can be triggered by many substances. So you need to try to keep what you take into your body as careful as possible to avoid triggering extra immune response and lupus flares.

Many people have trouble with sulfites (anything with sulfur) which means they need to avoid wine (full of sulfites) and other products containing it. I used to drink wine, but now don't, due to sulfur sensitivities that trigger lupus flares.

So taking in various compounds (like black seed oil) that are not necessary for your nutrition could cause more trouble than they're worth. If you look at the potential side effects of black seed oil, it does trigger an allergic response in many people and can cause kidney and liver problems, and blood clotting problems, which could be dangerous for lupus patients who already have inflammation problems in their organs and clotting issues.

So you need to try to eat as clean as possible and be careful what you take into your body. I would take no supplement at all without doing a lot of research on it and consulting your rheumatologist first. Many herbal treatments have serious side effects and can interact negatively with other medications you are taking too.

So everything you do as a lupus patient should be targeted to doing no harm and putting no additional stress on your immune system. You need to get your lupus stable (few or no flares if possible), and only carefully introduce any chemicals/drugs into your system to avoid making things worse. You also need to care for your thyroid in Hashimoto's by taking prescription thyroid hormones prescribed by your doctor, absolutely essential.

I do take regular vitamin supplements, extra vitamin D, and a couple other supplements known to help with sleep (tryptophan and melantonin), but only after careful research and checking the effect they had on my body to ensure they weren't problems. I've also *stopped* taking anything known to cause potential problems/side effects or that I realize may be causing me trouble. There are some herbal sleep supplements that bundle with lemon balm, and I stopped taking those because lemon balm is not good for people with thyroid.

So you need to be your own best advocate and detective to protect your health, and don't just blindly start taking various supplements just because someone mentioned somewhere they might be good for you. They may not be good at all for lupus or thyroid patients in particular who need to be very careful with anything that can trigger an immune response or damage kidneys, liver, lung, heart, thyroid, etc., because those organs are vulnerable in lupus.

Here's a link that talks especially about herbs you should *not* take with lupus, though there are many others that you probably shouldn't take due to potential problems with kidneys/liver etc. So always consult your doctor before taking any supplements, and do extensive research on the side effects, not just the benefits.

Thank you Sophie, I've been fighting auto immune diseases for 58 years I'm now 76 and unknowingly passed it on to one of my daughters and she unknowingly passed it to her daughter. I was recently diagnosed with lupus nephritis which is pretty much a death sentense. I have it at bay by drinking 2 cups of beet juice every day..... We women with autoimmune disorders must stick together and communicate

We are our best sources of dealing. it comes down to trial and error. UNTIL A CURE IS FOUND, IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO DO EVERYHING WE CAN DO TO HELP EACH OTHER,AND I SHALL NEVER ACCEPT THIS DISEASE. I SHALL FIGHT IT TO IT'S DEATH OR MINE. IT IS BY FAR THE HARDEST THING I'VE EVER DONE. I do allow myself an occasional "pitty pat party" , otherwise I'm a sweet little gray haired lady trying to make a difference.. I have THROMBOCYTOPENIA (IN AND OUT OF REMISSION) ,, RAYNARDS,, HYPOTHYROIDISM,, LUPUS and HOSHIMOTOS. I am open to any and all suggestions except acceptance.

Sophie, thanks for the tip, I took my first dose of black seed oil. Going to start with teaspoon am and pm and increase my intake of cumin. I only weigh 105 so I tend to start light and work up

God bless all of you strong men and women,,, never give up and never give in

It is recommended that you discuss any supplements like this with your consultant before trying them so that they can provide information about potential adverse effects or interactions with other treatments you may be taking. You need to be cautious with black seed oil because it can have an impact on bleeding disorders, blood sugar levels and blood pressure.
