What can trigger a flare?

I started with a cold about a week ago and it has got worse and worse. It just occurred to me today that it has triggered a lupus flare and that’s why I can’t get out of bed! Is that a likely reaction to a cold virus. My flares typically involve extreme fatigue and brain fog rather than aches and pain so not that disimilat to a bad cold.

Hello Marley, there is a lot of evidence that viruses and infections trigger flares. You should contact your rheumatologist or GP. It would be quite usual for them to increase your steroids to overcome the flare along with extra rest. Hoping that you feel better soon, with my very best regards, Lily

Thanks for responding. Usually I’m triggered by stress so was unsure about a cold. I took extra prednisolone yesterday as I’m allowed to self manage symptoms and feels loads better today. So nice to have back up on this forum.

So pleased to read that you have been able to take extra prednisolone and are feeling very much better today. It is such a difficult and challenging condition to manage but you encourage me that it is possible. Thank you for your post. Best regards, Lily

I was diagnosed about 40 years ago. It’s been quite a ride but I realise my Lupus is mild compared to many others. I’m also lucky that my consultant now trusts me to self manage. It does make things easier when you don’t have to check with doctors. I’ve had a lot of experience though and wouldn’t recommend it for everyone!

I always get a flare after a cold

Sounds like a flare. Gp would say its possible baterial secondary infection aka give u antibiotics but stress.lifestyle changes and diet can trigger it. With me its sudden stressful situations .

Thanks so much for responding. It is usually stress for me too but I feel better today after taking extra meds yesterday so pretty sure the virus triggered this mini flare.
