Hi all. Does anyone experience a persistent dry cough during the night or if they have over done things? Any thoughts on what to do? Lupus has affected my lungs but even when I had a pleural effusion I didn't cough. It has been happening over the last few months. Any advice would be gratefully received. Xx

Have you been to see your doctor? Amoung other things persistent coughing as you described may be Asthma either way it needs to be investigated and if needed something prescribed to help with the problem.
A lot of people don't realise that the main symptom of asthma is a persistent cough and that the wheezing is not always present to the naked ear.
Whatever is causing the problem it really is better to see your doctor.

Have you got asthma?
Are you hypertensive drugs for your blood pressure?
Either of these could make you cough at night
Many things can cause coughing. I also have a persistent cough and mucus production. Mine is mostly from esophageal dysmotility secondary to small fiber neuropathy. When I lie down, gastric contents reflux into my lungs. GERD can affect lungs at night. It’s called GERD induced asthma/reactive airway disease depending on severity and inhaler use. Acid from your stomach can reflux up and you can breath it into your lungs at night. This causes a chronic cough particularly while lying flat at night. Also sore throat in the AM. Many with lupus also have GERD.
You should reach out to your GP or pulmonologist about maybe getting spirometry to make sure everything is ok otherwise. Blood pressure meds such as Lisinopril, Valsartan aka ACE inhibitors and ARBs can also cause a dry hacking cough as a side effect.
As mention in other posts, asthma should be considered. If you’re having fevers, lymph nodes, chest pain, swelling or shortness of breath, I’d make a call to your GP.
Hope this helps and you find some answers!
Yes and more fatigued than usual. Not to alarm you but I was diagnosed with heart failure & my heart was enlarged. They missed it at first due to my young age (sent me to Pulmonologist who said lungs were clear). It persisted and I ended up with rails (fluid on lung) and edema (swelling in stomach & legs from fluid retention). Thankfully it was caught in time. I truly hope you feel better and find an answer. I have asthma but it’s a different feeling & cough.
From my experience with asthma, these are the symptoms I’m
Familiar with: you typically wheeze , have retractions or a cough that increases , becoming more persistent. Your face may change colors around your mouth, as well
