I have just read that Methotrexate should not be taken along with PPI's. Is this correct?
I take both and I think a lot of you here do, so is this information to be taken seriously?

Hello Georgie-girl
According to the professional info on drugs.com, "concomitant use of proton-pump inhibitors [like omeprazole] ...may elevate and prolong serum MTX levels...may lead to toxicities. Use with caution"
So yeah, definitely something to talk to your rheumy about. x
There’s an ideal world, when one would avoid this combination. And then there’s the real world where loads of us have to make this compromise. You should be having regular blood tests on MTX so any issues should be picked up. As long as your doctors know you are being prescribed both of course.
Thank you both for the info. I have never heard this before or been made aware of it by any doctors or even my pharmacist and they all know I take both.
I do have my bloods monitored every couple of weeks and everything seems to be ok but I will definitely be speaking to my rheumatologist about this .
I couldn't believe it when I read it, so thank you both very much for clarifying this for me. X
I asked about this as omeprazole is named as a drug to be avoided. I was assured that it would be fine and in fairness I have not had any issues.
I was on both for a long time but when I saw a consultant for a follow up on a stay in hospital a couple of years ago she advised me to stop taking omeprazole . My GP agreed with her & I haven't taken it since , with no bad effects.
My Rhumatology said just to drop omeprazole dose at same time as methotrexate, I’ve lowered to one omeprazole in morning now
Hi
I was moved from Omeprazole to Lansprazole re MTX. It was a chest consultant that suggested I change drugs. He did some digging and said Lansprazole was more suitable to take MTX.
Thank you all so much for your input and I must say I am surprised by the number of you that knew this. I have never checked it as I didn't think there was a reason to. My rheumatologist, neurologist, GP, Pharmacist and everyone else involved in my care all know I take both and never has anything been mentioned about not taking them.
I spoke to my vasculitis doctor yesterday asking him this question and he said he had never heard of a problem and that they were perfectly fine together.
It all seems rather confusing when even doctors can't agree but then there's no smoke without fire, so, I think I should maybe phone my rheumatologist for clarification as after all, he is the one with overall responsibility for my care.
I have never had any problems with taking them both and I'm not normally such a wimpy worrier with my meds, but having just been through a nightmare flare with new diagnosis' being suggested, I really don't want to be causing any more harm to myself if I don't have to.
Thank you all again for your help. X
