I had similar when my kidneys were first in trouble.

Either contact your lupus team or make an urgent appointment to see your gp.

You need the health professionals to be aware this is occurring so they can do whatever tests are required.

It could be an urgent situation so don't put it off.

I do mean this. If you can't get to see someone quickly either call 111 or attend a&e. Better to err on the safe side.

And make sure whoever sees you is aware you have lupus

I had that in the beginning. Swollen feet and hard to walk. And the next thing after they did biopsy, they told me I have lupus nephritis...and also I have protenueria from my urine test

Please get this looked at immediately. It could be kidney problems.

Hi Dearne,

Welcome to the LUPUS UK HealthUnlocked Community! We offer a free information pack which you can download or request here: lupusuk.org.uk/request-info...

Have you spoken to your GP/rehumatologist about this? Is the swelling throughout the whole of your legs or towards the bottom half?

According to The Lupus Encyclopedia, “one common symptom in people who have lupus nephritis is edema. This occurs when extra fluid leaks out of the blood vessels of the body. The effects of gravity then cause this fluid to collect into parts of the body that are closest to the ground. Since people are usually sitting and standing most of the day, they will develop swelling of the ankles and feet due to this fluid collecting in these areas”. The encyclopedia further states that in the early stages of lupus nephritis, it is possible to significantly decrease or stop the inflammation.

Please bear in mind that this is one possible cause of swelling in the lower legs; we are not medically qualified here so it is important you discuss your symptoms with your healthcare professional.

Please let us know how you get on, wishing you all the best.
