My brother has been suffering from systemic lupus for 12 years. He developed aggressive cataracts this past summer and had both eyes operated on in August (2 weeks apart). He is now having major inflammation along with eye tissue that is not healing because of poor blood flow. His lupus doctor has advised him to stop taking his methotrexate and cut his plaquenil medication in half. The steroid eye drops are preservative free and he is using them four times per day. We are looking for someone who has had a similar experience. Did it get worse with treatment before it got better? Was anyone else on lupus maintenance meds while undergoing treatment. He is afraid of going blind, losing his job, etc. Thank you in advance for any help you could offer. He lives in Texas so I realize some medications may have different names in the UK.

Lupus and cataract surgery
I was diagnosed with lupus a year ago. Have Uveitis so had inflammation in eyes. More in left than right. Had to have left eye cataract surgery last October and just had right one done 3 days ago. Had no problems with healing on left and doing good with right one now. I have been using prednisone eye drops and 10mg in pill form from my diagnosis. I also take plaquinel, imuran, ursodil, and a few other vitamins and prescriptions. I stayed on all my meds but my eye doctor increased prednisone pills to 60 mg and added an extra eye drop called durezol about 4 days before surgery to prevent inflammation. After surgery, I have antibiotic eye drops too I use to keep from infection setting in. I am not able to take methothrexate because my liver has been attacked by lupus so have to be careful with any medication that can cause more damage. I am able to see now after being so afraid I would be blind. Eye doctor I have is an awesome doctor.
