Rashes, Rheumys and Really Ratty!

The sun had his hat on last week which can only mean one thing - rash time. It wasn't very bad as I wasn't out in it much, but I snapped a photo of my neck when I saw it. It only came out on my neck this time - I have had it on my chest, neck and face before and much MUCH more concentrated than this. It itches like hell. And it hurts :( It comes out while I am in the sun, it is not a delayed reaction at all and it takes around a week to go away if I avoid the sun. Anyway, the rash leads me on to the letter the Rheumy sent my GP...

In it she said I have had "a facial rash in the past like sunburn but she denies any photosensitivity." She asked me if I had been burned in the sun and I said no it wasn't sunburn it looked like sunburn. I forgot to mention that I get this rash on going out in the sun (forgetful). I've Googled photos of various types of sun rashes and it doesn't look like any of them. Does it look like anyone else's sun rash? I thought it may be prickly heat but it isn't the right colour, it isn't in the usual places and it comes out immediately.

I only have one photo where the face rash (which doesn't look like this) is really clear - I will post it next along with full contents of rheumy letter...

Yes, I get a rash like this on unproteced skin. I now avoid the sun at all costs, which isn't easy, even in Scotland! I'm on hydroxy all year round and get Sunsense factor 50 sun lotion on prescription. It does help a bit. Hope this helps, even if it just proves you're not alone.

Yes it wasn't even majorly sunny that day hence no protection but it was obviously enough! If we lived in Spain it would be easier - oh it's really sunny again today need to cover up. Here it is oh it is raining/foggy/snowing and by lunchtime the sun is beating g down!! I'm glad to hear someone else has a rash like this. First time i got it i saw the nurse who said she'd never seen anything like it before. She actually recoiled but it was particularly bad that time! But no one has ever been able to tell me what it is. You Google and lupus comes up as a possible cause of photosensitivity, see you actually have loads of the symptoms, look for images of the rashes and they are all different! And that is your welcome to the crazy world of auto immune diseases! I'll show the pic of the rash to the rheumy next time altho as the appt is June i may actually have the rash when i go! Or i would if i was in Spain. May be snowing here :)

Thanks Paul. I am normally very good at protecting myself - it's when the weather is changeable or unexpectedly sunny that i can be caught out! I will read the article as it will probably have suggestions i have never thought of!!
