Anyone know if this rash is lupus or not?

I've had this rash for a while now, it comes for a few weeks or even months and then goes away. It itches and more lumps come ever day. I have it all over the backs of my hands and I have a few lumps on my legs and feet

I get similar on hands and arms - also legs - in hot weather. Gets quite red and swollen. When it was very bad in 2013 I had 3 day steroid treatment and now take antihistimes, which definitely help - as does keeping cool. Can see it a little on my right hand at the moment but not very itchy. I call it turning into a toad...

forgot to add - do go see your GP! It can be difficult with a long term illness to know what is what - which symptoms need to be shown to GP/consultant, is it something unrelated...etc

It doesn't look like a Lupus rash. It looks more like eczema. I get the butterfly rash on my face as well as my neck and chest every summer for 27 years now so I have a pretty good idea of what that looks like. This looks very different.

Have you started taking any new medication? My hands did this from taking hydroxchlorquine and then started to peel. Could just be prickley heat looks alot like that too. Xx

Doesn't look like a lupus rash but an eczema type of rash. Have a look at dyshydrotic eczema which comes up a bit like yours and tends to affect the hands and feet

At first sight it looks like prickly heat type rash.... If indeed it is it will probably react to antihistamines!

However, when mine started (25 + years back) it looked like severe prickly heat but didn't improve with antihistamines. Eventually went to see dermatologist and 5 years later was diagnosed with discoid lupus.

I was told by a specialist the form I have (sub cutaneous) has 4 stages and generally starts off looking like prickly heat and progresses to take a different form over time.

My advice would be to try the antihistamine and if they don't work go and see a dermatologist.

Good Luck

Hi Chloe, & thanks Winz,

You learn something new every day! I get this rash on my hands. At present it comes & goes and I had assumed it was heat rash but through it strange its appearance didn't coincide with hot weather. It also does not respond to antihistamines.

Mines OK at present so will keep a watchful eye on it, but when it plays-up it is intensely itchy & stops me from sleeping. I have found that cold packs help suppress the itch, so this might help in the short term.

All the best

Sarah

Hi

I have had a similar type of rash on my fingers which comes and goes. I thought it might be related to my connective tissue disease but no one took much notice of it, so I thought I must be wrong. It can look like tiny warts because the spots are hard but they itch like mad and are not wart shaped. They have up until now just been over my fingers. It's hard to tell but they look similar to your photo.

I was getting these before I started any medication for autoimmune conditions and when I think of it they haven't appeared as much since i have been on my recent dose of meds.

You should get it checked out by your GP tho.

Let us know what they say, I will be intrigued.
