I'm due an endoscopy tomorrow with sedation. I am absolutely petrified! :(

Just wondered if anyone had any experiences, googled it and read some horror stories!

Please try not to worry. I have had it done. With the sedation you hardly notice anything.

My sis-in-law had it done. She said she laid on the bed waiting then said 'when are you going to do it?' The staff said 'we've done it...!' Ha, she hadn't even realised.

Oh wow! That sounds amazing! Hope that happens to me :)

That's cheered me up, thank you.

Jo

Take the sedation! You'll be fine and it'll be worth it in the end! Good luck!

Definitely go for sedation its absolutely fine as mine was to confirm coeliac they offered me the numbing spray first- it tasted of banana and was horrible. I then had my sedation, woke up in a different room and it over- didn't remember a thing. Good luck!

I had it without sedation and it was ok. It wasn't pleasant but it was ok. I didn't gag or anything - I was aware of it all and could feel excess wind in my stomach. But I'd do it again without sedation without any concerns.

Hope you get on on x

I had an endoscopy a few weeks ago under sedation, dont worry .you wont know anything about it.once they give you the sedation you are "out of it".they gave me the "throat spray "as well before the sedation.

Yes I was really worried too, such a horrible thought, nothing to it honestly can't even remember having it done.

Good luck

Worry not Joanne, you will not remember a thing. Had one done a few weeks ago. Soon as I had had a drink and something to eat, I was up and out of the department within hour and half.

Hi Joanne

Good luck for your endoscopy tomorrow. I've had them with sedation and it's the best way, was so unaware of it being done!. The staff are usually very kind too especially if you say your worried. Let us know how you get on. X

Thank you so much!

The waiting is the worst, just want to get in and get it done.

All of your replies put my mind at ease and I had a good nights sleep.

I've had 2 endoscopies over the years - the most recent was last spring. I think you've got great replies here!

I too was terrified before my first endoscopy 10 years ago...but it went well, and the nurse vvvv kindly helped me tough out the more difficult moments, eg for me these were while swallowing the endoscope....so, my suggestion is that You let the consultant & the nurse know if you are feeling scared even though they are sedating you. This is what I did...and I think they were extra kind as a result. So, be honest with the team treating you.about your anxiety...they will have loads of experience and want to help you

Take care

XO

It's fine, I had one done last year and it's surreal (because you're awake and chatting with the person performing it) but pretty much painless. The sedation means you feel nothing more than a little pressure and then the sensation of cool water so, weird but fine.

Hi,

Just a thought for anyone who is waiting for an endoscopy - Just make sure you have the sedation. They told me that it would be better for me not to have it as I wouldn't have to be there so long. But that's not the reason - they didn't want me to have the sedation because it is quicker for them! Don't be swayed - have the sedation. You won't notice a thing and wake up to tea and toast!

in reply toLtAngua52

Yes I agree, I have had two and both times had to insist on sedation, dont let them talk you out of it. Like others say, its not painful, just very strange. Good luck x

Hope it goes ok. I've had several over the years and never had the sedation. It depends on whether you want to spend the next few hours sitting around in the hospital while they decide you are awake and aware enough to go home. At least without the sedation you are in and out. The banana spray helps a bit but you will probably feel as if you are gagging all of the time which isn't nice but it doesn't last long and if you're lucky they will let you watch the screen so you can see what they are up to. It isn't often you get the chance to see inside yourself safely. When they found my hiatus hernia it made it much easier for them to explain it to me as I was actually looking at it with them.

Whatever you choose I hope the results are positive for you.

I've now had 3 endoscopies and a colonoscopy. One instance without sedation - never again! The others with - and I don't recall anything about those, other than waking up to a cup of tea and a sandwich, being taken home and then falling asleep again for most of the day. The thought of it is actually the bad bit!

Hi everyone.

Do not know what I was worried about! Got myself in a right state!

Had sedation, last thing I really remember was the throat spray then the mouth piece going in. Remember feeling movement in my tummy and them saying all done, no pain or discomfort atall. Sedation all the way. Couldn't even tell you how long it took.

Got off the bed a bit wobbly and walked in to the recovery bit and had coffee and cake and left straight away. Haven't been sleepy since atall.

Blimey had some gas though where they put air in your stomach but feel fine.

Got to wait for results to come back but he said all looked fine.

Thank you so much everyone for your replies, helped me so much
