My husband has terrible shin pain - could it be a side effect of steroids or lansoprazole? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,

I am afraid I don't really have an answer for you, but just wanted to say that I went through a similar thing of the worst shin pain. I thought I had fractured it, but xrays were clear, it hurt so much to put weight on, and this went on for months. No real cause was found, and I was limping terribly and became housebound, but then after about 3 months it gradually started to get better. I too am on steroids, so wonder if they could be involved as they are very powerful drugs. I wish you husband better, and am sorry I can not give you a more conclusive reply.

Hi Anne,

I occasionally get shin pain, although not severe, which comes and goes. It feels as if it is in the bones and I mainly notice it at night. I don't know what causes it.

I did get shin pain until I was told in no uncertain terms I wasn't allowed pred any more. I had a DXA (dexa) scan which highlighted that my bones weren't replacing the cells quicker than they were eroding (osteopenia).

Perhaps asking about a DXA scan with the specialist would be useful.

I do not take steroids but have shin pain, sometimes worse than others. My leg muscles are tender to touch as are my shoulders, tops of arms. I used to enjoy a full body massage;which I felt helped me, but am now unable to stand any pressure. My Doc changed my statins as he said they can have these side effects. It could be just a flare up that will settle down, hope it does.
