If it is accessible to be by video assisted thorachotomy surgery (VATS), that is the best option. The surgery is less invasive and yields a shorter recovery time.
If you are not currently exercising then its time to start walking. If there is a Livestrong program at your local YMCA that's the greatest. If not check with your hospitals oncology social worker to see what they offer. Another place to start exercising would be a Cancer Support Community or a Gildas Club. If they're not close enough check into your local senior center, many have a range of activities including gentle, adapted exercise classes.
When scheduled for my first colonoscopy post nsclc treatment the surgeon contacted my oncologist and asked if it was really necessary, after all "with stage 4 lung cancer I would be dead soon anyway." My oncologist asked if I was due and was told yes. So there was the surgeons answer. The anesthetist was VERY hesitant but when I told him I walked 2 miles 3-4 times a week his whole demeanor changed. Besides the look of surprise in his face he sat back like I'd startled him and he sat taller. You could see tension leave his face and shoulders. (I wanted to play poker with this guy).
In short, START WALKING.
Great advice from Denzie - anything you can do to make yourself stronger between now and surgery will help you recover more easily. I walk, and I also do the Royal Canadian Air Force XBX exercises. They only take 10 minutes, require no gym or special equipment, and very gradually make you stronger all over.
