How long to wait for a tracheotomy

Hello. So my brother has been weaned off sedation abit. However he has been becoming distressed- not surprising as he has a tube down his throat and the nurses have told him where he is. He is still not fully unsedated - his partner is struggling as she showed him a picture of their daughter but he was u responsive. However he is following commands to open eyes move feet etc. I was just wondering - we were told he could now have his trachy it was meant to be Wednesday then Thursday then possibly Friday - well it’s still not been done. Is this reasonable ? My brothers blood pressure is shooting up and he is showing clear signs of distress and anxiety. I thought they wouldn’t start weaning u til he had the trachy. His partner says she keeps asking but is not getting any answers - it’s horrendous knowing he is so distressed and frightened. Any thoughts or experiences on the above? His partner has been allowed to see him. I hope I shall be able to visit him soon.

Hi, we just got to speak to our mum with the nurse holding the phone to her ear. Shes had her sedation dropped and the nurse said its been dropped a lot today but she's still not conscious, I hope she could hear us. We are going to take some of her favorite cds in tomorrow and get some photos and messages on her WhatsApp for the nurses to share with her when she starts to come too.

It's a worrying time as they tried reducing her sedation last Wednesday and she did take some breaths but she got exhausted and distressed and had to be sedated again but they discovered she had a chest infection so she's been on antibiotics so hopefully this time she does better.

It's such an anxious time. I hope your brother can come off his sedation and they can control his anxiety and stress levels.

If he is in ICU than make an appointment to discuss what is going on, they should be OK to do that. Don't wish a trach on someone unless it is absolutely necessary, perhaps they are hoping he won't need it. I spend several weeks in a coma and didn't have one, I was intubated the entire time something which surprised my consultants but despite the recovery, it was faster than had they sliced into my throat.

Hello I am sorry for what is going on I wanted to tell you that when my father was being weaned off the sedation he was trying to pull his tubes off he was frightened and he had to be tied down for safety the doctors told me it is normal when being in a coma I was horrified but had full hope that he would get better I send positive thoughts if they are not answering questions speak to management it works.

I need to preface my comments by everyone is different. I find it really difficult about answering the question about responding to relatives. I know some patients experiences are different to mine. But the trachy didn’t delay my recovery. For the time I was in a coma about 2 months I was not aware of people speaking to me it was only once I was being weened off that I heard conversations and these didn’t always make sense. I know from my notes that staff were constantly talking to me and explaining what they were doing especially during intimate washing but I had no idea what was going on.It takes time. In a couple of weeks it will be my 2nd anniversary of going into icu

The update is : my brother is currently in ICU having his tracheostomy. I feel so anxious. Praying everything will go ok x x

That's great news, when my husband had his, his oxygen requirement increased for a day or two, once it was a bit more stable day by day he got a little bit stronger . I'm only telling you this in case his oxygen requirement is increased .

Thank you so much for this as I have been wondering what to expect next. The procedure went well and I have seen him on video he looks a lot more peaceful and comfortable. He’s currently on morphine.
