What an amazing site! It’s nice to know I’m not alone! There are so many people experiencing the same thing. It’s hard to see my dad in icu fighting for his life! Covid pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, diabetic, urinary retention, kidneys failing, inflammation, water around lungs, ventilator now with tracheotomy, a coma.
Looks pretty bad, but never giving up!
Breathing on his own, still 40% oxygen.
He had to show more signs of consciousness! It’s so hard. Any one have any advice or going through something similar. They tried to shut off the ventilator today, put it back on because his breathing became laboured. I thought they would slowly wean down the oxygen!! How does this work?

Sounds very strange to just shut off the oxygen without weaning. I was given a trachy on day 14 and it took a further two weeks to wean me off the ventilator (non Covid). The length of the process is very variable and depends on many factors. Can't offer any advice, just hope things work out.
The important thing about a trachy is that it is an alternative way to help breathing. I wasn't tolerating a breathing tube and tried to pull it out but the trachy didn't cause an issue I tried to pull other tubes out but not that. I was ventilated/sedated for just under 2 months and trachy stayed in after that as still needed breathing support. Once I was aware of it, it didn't cause me any problems other than I didn't have a voice. Over time I had a mechanical voice box fitted on the outside which I was allowed to use for short periods. Once it was removed it took about 3 weeks to heal - I think.
Weaning off invasive ventilation assists a patient to breathe unaided. The process is complex and may take days, more than a week in my case. The weaning plan is individualised - this link explains what happens : academy.esicm.org/mod/emodu...
My dad got his trach put in 5 days ago after 34 days on the ventilator he had been on 50% oxygen and 6 pressure but the last few days he has been on 60% now this morning 70% with a fever 100.9 I just don’t understand why he keep getting a small fever every week although they usually break..this one has lasted over night.. they have been weaning him from sedation and he opens his eyes but that’s all..he still has sedatives in him..it’s so frustrating 😐 but we are continually praying
Same with my husband...so glades found this site..been looking for site like this my God.My husband has been on ventilator and induced coma. Each time they try reducing his sedation, he gets agitated and blood pressure goes up.
He was stable with 35% oxygen requirements, but last week, he had sepsis, chest infection and lungs fluid. This increased his oxygen requirements and made him more ill. They have to continue with the heavy sedation. Yesterday, they told me everything is still same as he needs more time for his lungs to heal and covid off his system.
Its so frustrating..and more frustrating as I can't even see him.
It’s been 40+ days since my dad has been on a vent and although we thought he was getting better the doctors will call and say he is making progress and then we will not hear from them until about 10 days later to say he isn’t make progress although he was stable enough for a trach a week ago (they didn’t even have the decency to tell us that he received a trach we found that out through the nurse and I have to beg the nurse to tell the doctors to call and they never call when he is doing well only when he seem to be having bad days) at this point I know they are tired of him 😔 I’m so hurt about all of this..my 👑 I miss him strong funny and the hardest, sweetest papa and husband this morning I called them and told me he is still running a fever at 100.8 they will probably tell us it’s sepsis as well I’m sure😞
I’ve just been reading your post and it’s a subject close to my heart having my own dad on tracheostomy on vent. I am so so sorry to hear he has passed away, sending you prayers X x x
I am so sorry to hear this about your dad, as my dad is in ICU fighting covid you hear so much mixed story's young healthy you just don't know the outcome! Rest in peace xxx
