Never give up hope

So after 8weeks on a ventilator my amazing dad has been on a step down ward for the past 5 days . It all happened so fast. I was allowed to visit last week on ICU for the first time since he was admitted. It was emotional and exciting he had lost lots of weight. He came off the cpap and a day later they took his tracy out. Lett me tell anyone out there who is dealing with this don't give up hope. My dad suffered covid pnemonia, 6 infections and another pnemonia. He was proned for over a week for 20 hours suffering pressure sores I was told so many times it would be a miracle of he got through the severe infection. And he did at one point they couldn't even find an antibiotic to treat bug he was growing they had to act fast and amazingly he's over come it all. Also suffered stiff lungs and scaring due to being on such a high pressure for so many weeks. The last two months I have ate or slept properly I've suffered bad mental health. He's currently on 1litre nasal oxygen. He's remembers everything before he went in he's been fantastic he just wants to get home. At the moment he cannot walk he says he feels numb they are wanting to move him back to our local hospital but since it's bank hol they are struggling. He's very anxious and keeps thinking he can't breath witch is understandable. He has a little crackling in lungs docs are keeping an eye on and he's been able to resume eating after being off the trachy for a day the nurse said it's unbelievable. I'm so estactic I've got my bestfriend back and my children have there grandad back it's just this next hurdle we must over come. Thank you for sharing your experience. Delighted that your father is doing so well and may he continue to improve. My sister has been on ventilator for 5 weeks and had a traceostomy last week. Initially doctors were pessimistic about her recovery but she is a fighter and survivor. I have gained additional hope from your father's experience. Thank you

My dad was also 5 weeks in a coma just entering his 6th when he had the trachy and it still felt like no improvement it came on all of a sudden. They told me only 3 weeks ago if he didn't start to improve they wouldn't be any improvement I was unconsolable. By a miracle he slowly started to have oxygen and pressure reduced. Last week they said he had a set back and it was going to be a long road. By another miracle he also over come that and 3 days later was off the ventilator. Please don't give up you are the fight for that person depending on you. My dad's ordered a Sunday roast today it's almost a dream to hear them words come out his mouth as silly as it soundds. Praying for your sister 🙏

Thank you sooooo much. Never give up hope and send your love to your family member even when you can't visit them. Science can explain a lot but not everything including the power of love. My father had 3 heart attacks in surgery 30 years ago and needed a triple bypass. He was in a coma and my mum was told that he would not survive the day and asked to consider turning off life support. Mum refused and said she knew our love would pull him through. She stayed by his side 22 hours a day only going home to shower and napped in a chair next to his bed. Dad lived for 22 years and although he had the effect of brain damage and tremors, he lived a good quality of life. Mum took the lead in his rehabilitation- she helped him everyday to learn to walk, speak, hold things, feed himself etc. He enjoyed spending time with Mum, us children, grandchildren and friends. That's why despite taking on the reality that my sister was very ill and could die, we focused on our love and prayers for her and and hung on to every tiny positive and progress to exhale and send her the positivity to fight.

There are many stories here about recovery and they keep us 'rellies' going. I kept in my mind that each day brought us closer to Peter coming home and each day will bring some improvements, even if we don't see it. Keep praying for recovery.
