Pancreatitis and Sepsis: Just saying hello... - ICUsteps
Pancreatitis and Sepsis
Welcome, critical illness is a bit of a life changer.
How did I recover?
- this forum definitely aided me. I also am part of an ICUsteps group. Hopefully you will find some of the missing pieces here.
Loads of physio, good diet, exercise & a determination to get back to normal life & all itâs challenges. Thankfully I am lucky to have very supportive family & friends.
@MarthaKos
Some of the ICUsteps are operating on Zoom - we have a weekly drop-in meeting. We also have 2 x chair based exercise groups on Zoom per week with a qualified trainer Monday & Friday 11am - this Wednesday we start our first gentle yoga class.
Some of these classes have Covid patients & their families in mind but they are not exclusively so. Our mission to help families retrieve as good a quality of life as is possible after ICU.

Hi Lisa!
My mother has been diagnosed with Pancreatitis and while being in hospital got shifted to ICU and was later diagoned with sepsis. Doctors have ran numerous tests but haven't been able to find the infection. So, they are covering broad antibiotics and anti fungal.
She continues to be in ICU and is in critical condition.
Just wanted to check how are doing and can you share your experience which could guide us and help my mother.
Thanks
Hello,
Iâm so sorry you are going through this. It can escalate so fast, which is terrifying.
Have faith in the doctors. They will aggressively treat your mum with antifungal and antibiotics and make sure her pain is controlled.
There may be times when sheâs sedated, asleep, or awake. There may even be times when she doesnât know you and doesnât make sense. She may even get angry and confused. That is the pancreatitis and sepsis and pain. Donât be scared.
Let me know how sheâs doing, because I can help.
Stay strong and have faith in the doctors. They are doing everything that they can.
Stay in touch,
Lisa x
Thanks Lisa..
The doctors over here aren't able to figure out the organism which has caused the infection. The blood cultures and various other tests are negative. Even though the WBC is back to normal the Pro Calcotonin (PCT) continues to be very high 22-23.
How long did it take for you to recover?
Even though my mum isn't sedated anymore but many a times she doesn't respond to our calls at all and just wants to sleep.
She wants to sleep and she wonât be able to stay awake. Also, talking to anyone is incredibly exhausting, so donât take it personally xx
Iâm sorry to say that Iâm still recovering almost 2 years later, but I had a lot of interventions that left nerve damage and scar tissue. That isnât everyoneâs story.
Stay strong x
