Dad had been in ICU for about 56 days on a ventilator due to Covid, he was finally transferred to rehab with a tracheotomy. He was still on dialysis but kidneys were just starting to kick in. He was awake, alert but couldn’t speak yet. Had minimal muscle movement, was using his right hand however his left hand wasn’t working yet. The nurses noticed his left arm was swollen so they did an ultrasound on it and found a small blood clot. They assured us that we shouldn’t be alarmed as it’s really small and not blocking any arteries, they said they are working on it and treating with blood thinners. A few hours later at night my dad had a seizure and suffered a massive stroke 😢 he hasn’t woken up from it yet. Scans showed lots of blood around the brain. The doctors don’t sound hopeful at this point they’re telling us to prepare for the worst as they suspect that his brain stem has been damaged 😞 please please please let me know if anyone has experience this!!
Also I have to add that we had FaceTimed him a couple of hours before this happened and he looked terrible! Extremely exhausted! They had done dialysis for him 3 days in a row with no breaks!!! And he had been on cpap for over 10 hours that day!

I’m so sorry to hear this. From what I have heard it’s incredibly common. Don’t worry about being on dialysis for that length of time, it’s more likely in ICU he is on a filter which does require it for several days at a time, it’s a more gentle version of dialysis. They then take the patients off to change the circuit every few days, usually leaving off for a day or so to see if the kidneys kick in. They have been doing that for almost 3 months for my husband but they are too badly damaged so he will likely need long term dialysis. There are so many risks whilst they are on a ventilator including clots, pneumonia (the latter my husband had 3 times) and line infections. Movement will be very little when on a vent for so long as the muscles break down to protect the body and it takes a long long time to come back. My husband was on a vent for 61 days and has been in ICU for 77 so far. He could do nothing but blink when first came out of sedation. Yesterday he walked down the corridor with a frame. It’s a slow and torturous process. I have heard of many who have recovered having had strokes during this. Separately my Dad had a stroke 10 years ago, you would never know it to meet him. Keeping everything crossed for your Dad. So many times we get told it doesn’t look good and they surprise us all 🤞🏻 X
