My dad is 70 and 3 days ago just come out of a week long induced coma. He started having seizures and was sedated and intubated. They then found a chronic sinus infection that had tracked back into his brain. Then they found the start of sepsis and it attacked his kidneys. The CT Scan was good and his prognosis is good. The infection has gone and he’s been moved out of ITC.
I know he’s done so so well in recovering but he’s so confused. He says the strangest of things. I’m so worried for him. I don’t cry infront of him but feel so so sad. I’m really physically and emotionally exhausted and I just want my dad back.
Does anyone know about post coma recovery please ? As I really don’t know what to expect. Many thanks.

I woke up after 57 day coma, confused & mistrusting. It took another eleven days to come around but even then I was unsure as to which reality I was in. The sedatives play havoc with your emotions, sense of reality & mental faculty. Encourage your father to do all the physiotherapy that is available and suitable.
Depending on your fitness & age, it can take 14 days to recover from every day you are in ICU. Slow & steady is the name of the game.

Hi, my dad was in a coma for nearly 6 weeks with septic shock. The second set of antibiotics gave him seizures. It took 3 different types plus dialysis to get the infection. It took him over a week to wake up then he had 10 days of saying the strangest things. He’d had to be tied down because he was pulling his tubes out. He thought he’d been in a knife fight andthought the doctors were trying to kill him. He saw all kinds of strange things. It’s just the drugs coming out of the body and it doesn’t last. My dad is now out of hospital and recovering. Physically he has some way to go but mentally he is the same person as before ( but a little more chilled). So try not to worry. It’s hard now but it will get better.

I’m so grateful to have found a forum like this as the hospital have been good but this side of things we didn’t understand at all. It’s so so odd. Prior to this whole saga I thought people were just woken up from a coma and were “normal”. I can smile at this now ! My dad thinks he’s at the seaside and my mum and sister are trying to steal all his stuff. It’s so bizarre. Thank you again, really appreciate it and glad your dad is doing ok. Best wishes to you.
Hi, my dad got ill in October ( last year) . Was in icu for nearly 8 weeks in total. Then a week in a general ward and 3 weeks in a Physio/rehab place. He came home 2 days before Christmas. He is doing really well but gets very tired. From here I learned that for every 1 day in ICU it takes 10 days to recover. Every time he gets frustrated at being poorly I have to remind him ( and the rest of us) that he hasn’t even been out of hospital 2 months yet. Try not to worry about the hallucinations or weird talk. You’ll be able to laugh about it together in a few weeks time. Best wishes.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone on here that replied. My Dad is at home and although not back to normal is doing pretty well. He still has memory issues but I do appreciate it’s early days in his recovery. I’m just very grateful he is here. Sending much love to you all.

Hello he’s doing pretty well thank you. He still has issues with his memory at times, can get sensory overload and now has anxiety. However, if you met him you probably would never know that he struggles at times. I asked for him to have a vitamin B12 infusion in the hospital and that helped hugely with the post coma delirium. Thank you, i hope your dad recovers asap. Dont worry if it takes a while for your dad to wake up. It took mine nearly a week. It depends on a lot of different factors. Please let me know how he gets on. Sending huge hugs x
