Stomach Bug

Hi all, I took my warfarin dose last night at 7pm and then succumbed to a stomach bug that has gone around my kids, and I was sick at 8pm. I am assuming that the warfarin I took probably came out.

Obviously I'm not going to double dose tonight but any thoughts on what I should do, maybe an INR test on Monday? (I self test).

Thanks,

Stuart.

Hi Stuart

I have found that Warfarin tablets disolve very quickly; if one gets under the tongue or trys to hide anywhere in the mouth. As you self test I would, if I weere still on Warfarin and self testing (I'm on fragmin now), do daily tests and adjust your dose gradually until you are happy with the stabiliy of your INR.

If your are at all worried do phone the Dr.

Best wishes.

Dave

Thanks all. I couldn't find an emergency number and can't face sitting in the hospital for urgent care for 6 hours waiting for someone to send me home! So will take normal dose tonight and do a test tomorrow maybe and speak to the clinic on Monday.

Bug has passed though thank god!

Regards,

Stuart.

Same happened to me whilst I was on holiday. My inr was low the next day so I called the doctor where I was staying. He advised me on a dose then I spoke to my anti coag clinic. (I self test) . If it's a weekend at home my GP has an out of hours no. On his phone or there is always NHS direct. I was told that changes in dosage take a day or two to take effect. I test weekly as advised only more often if unwell but never every day as my health authority will only prescribe 10 test strips per year; nurse gives me extra but at some stage may have to buy them myself, but that's another story!

Hope you're feeling better.j

Hi (panda60), I think you are correct, I have been told on several occasions by doctors and clinics, that everything to do with warfarin takes two days; such change of dose, change of diet, alcohol, vitamin K intake etc.

Since it was 2 days since I was unwell, I did an INR test tonight and it's come out as 2.8 (my range is 2.0 - 3.0) so am pretty pleased/relieved that it had no real impact.

Am feeling much much better now thanks and back to normal eating again now; and thankfully all my kids are also back to normal now too.

Regards,

Stuart.
