Hi there

Does anyone know the best place to secure travel insurance to account for pre exisitng blood clot related disorders?! We are going to South Africa on honeymoon in 3 weeks time and I am having difficulty obtaining a reasonable quote.

Many thanks, Karen x

Congratualtions - I hope you have a fab time, I'm so jealous!

Try Free Spirit - they are pretty good but can be fiendishly expensive - I've had to pay over £400 for a fortnight on RSA before and my last clot was in 1999! I got an annual policy this year (with a kidney transplant) through travelinsurancemedical.co.uk and they seem to be more competative. However, thankfully (and fingers crossed, touch wood etc) I have never had to use my insurance so I can't comment on their service!

I always take an empty credit card so that if the worse comes to theworse I can stick myself back on a plane and fly home.

Good luck - it is a bit soul destroying!

I thought HSF had a travel Ins company that was mentioned somewhere on the site as being helpful for us?

Hi Karen

I was hoping the blanket ban on APS by travel and insurance companies had lifted as I managed to get travel insurance for Turkey a couple of months ago through Insure and Go quite reasonably (hadn't been able to for the last five year - one mention of APS and the shutters came down).

Failing that, please try Freedom Insure - they specialise for people with pre-existing medical conditions. If they are affordable and you do take a policy with them, quote HUGHES and they will make a donation to the charity.

Good luck with the wedding plans and I hope the honeymoon is fantastic :)

Kate

Me again - one of our charity's members has replied to the article about insurance and has sent in the following information:

"Nat West provide our travel insurance [underwritten by UK Insurance Limited (UK)] and they insure me for an annual supplement of currently £60. Individual medical questions in relation to APS history are of course asked.

Nat West and UK Insurance are part of the RBS group.

natwest.com/personal/insura...

I'm not sure if you need to be a Nat West customer however. "

Maybe it's worth giving these a go if the other two won't cover you or are too expensive?

Kate

Bum - I feel as though they saw me coming!!!! Tx

Hi I just got travel insurance through travel-insurance-web.com who cliam they don't penalise high risk customers. I'm going to Tenerife next week for 7 days and they insured me for £20 with medical insurance. Not bad when my first quote through esure was over £77. Good luck and congratulations, hugs n stuff, Heather x

Have you tried Saga? They did me a good deal, and not just for over 50s.

Oh please keep this info coming. I used to work for BA so have travel perks which I have not been able to use for awhile due to Stroke. I was beginning to think I was going to loose them.

My Son has just announced he has a job in San Francisco so I really need to know I can get out there in the future so saying goodbye will be easier!!!

Hi,

I also got travel insurance through Nat West. It is included in the Premier Account package but be careful because I was told that my APS was covered and when I double checked they said it wasn't! I had to pay £100 but this was for annual cover.

Hi Karen

Soon after I had a Heart attack we were due to go on holiday, long haul trip,I tried every Insurance going and no body would insure me at last after loads of phone calls.I spoke to MIA clear to go. insurance company, they insure the children from the make a wish foundation.

I spoke to a Nurseand as my heart attack was due to a clot and was then covered by Clexane, she seemed happy for me to go,. sorry forgotton how much but as it was the only company i didn't really care, I am not sure if I can put the link on here, but you should be able to find it. Son also works for an airline : )

Good luck

love Karen xx (the other one)

Hi Karen,

My hubby and i are with nat west (get free annual insurance as advantage gold customers) they covered me initially for free with the diagnosis of sagital sinus thrombosis but i contacted them recently with this flare up and i had to pay a £60 additional charge as i explained i had APS with raised antibodies with previous clots and wanted to make sure they had that down.

I did not travel in the end due to my father in law having an heart attact and subsequently sadly passed away. I can only comment on them as a company in relation to this claim and i had to claim once when my bag was stolen and the claim department are excellent very helpful and so easy to get hold off. You get to speak to someone straight away! so refreshing in the current climate of so many companies using automated messages!. They settled my claim quickly when my bag was stolen abroad and have been excellent over the more recent claim. (due to get our money back any day). I have never had to claim for personal illness but going by the other claims we have had to make i would highly recommend them.

Hope this helps kathy xx

Hi Karen

We travel frequently and i have an annual policy with the AA which i have had for 3-4 years and they are always happy to continue. I just give them an update each year if anything has changed. It costs me about £120 per year.
