DepoProvera compatible with APS?

I just began DepoProvera injections to prevent ovulation due to serious bleeding after a normal ovulation. Is anyone else out there using this form of birth control and have you had any problems with it?

Hi, it's me again. Here in Brazil I used to take depo pro era and I really loved it. My APS doctor agreed with my obgin that I should take it. And whilst taking it, there was no signs of bleeding. Trouble is Brazilian agency of health has forbidden it to be sold in the drugstores :'( now I take another pill. But I miss depo provera very much. I am confident that you will be happy with it.

I was told that the only things I should use for APS is the implanon (implant in your arm) or an IUD. They said those were the safest in our condition. Your doc may have other thoughts but I am very happy with the implant and it lasts for 3 years which is awesome!

My daughter had the depo injection as when she went to get the contraceptive pill they said based on my history (she has not been tested) this and the implant was all they would consider for her. It stop all periods and she was happy with it.

My obgyn told me no. I was not to use any both control that was hormone related. He went on to say that I was very lucky all those years while on birth control. I do believe his recommendation.

All the best, leda

Hi Olleberj, I have APS and Protein S- deficiency and I have used Depo-Provera for the last 6 years as one of several migraine prophylaxis. Depo-Provera does not contain oestrogen. The most relevant information from Wikipedia regarding your question is:

Depo-Provera has several advantages:

No estrogen. No increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), stroke, or myocardial infarction. For more info from Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depo-...

There is a small but significant increased risk of osteoporosis with long term use of Depo-Provera, so for that reason I have a Dexa Scan (bone scan) every 2 years and make sure I get enough calcium and vitamin-D.

I have no problems using the injections, no bruising or pain and my periods stopped completely after some spotting the first 12 months. Depo-Provera helps keeping my hormone levels more levelled, not so much up and down within the cycles like it was before and reduces the amount and intensity of some of my migraines. Wish I could say I never had migraines anymore, but at least it helps!

Hope it will reduce or stop your periods too so you won’t have any heavy bleeds more :-)

Take care,

Helene
