Trigger Warning:

Hi, i need some advice. I have had 1 miscarriage and 2 missed miscarriage all happened this year. I was tested with APS and told to start heparin and aspirin once pregnant. I have a positive preg test last 24th December. Went to OB yesterday and had my blood withdrawn. Now, i started to have light brown discharges. Idk if it’s due to blood thinners or what. Anyone who had this experience but still had successful pregnancy?

Hi, sorry for your losses and congratulations on your new pregnancy. We can't advise medically as we are not trained but we can share our experiences and give you support.

Noticing spotting or light bleeding during 1st trimester of pregnancy can feel terrifying, but it isn’t always a sign that something is wrong. Many women who spot during pregnancy go on to deliver a healthy baby.

Yes, blood thinners can make a small discharge look a lot worse as well as be a cause of bleeding, with your new symptom and concerns I would contact your OB or your GP, so that they can check on you and baby and give you the reassurance you need.

Hi congrats on your pregnancy, it is vital you keep in touch with your specialist and GP to ask them questions if you have a new symptom or any bleeding. Us lot tend to get checked more than other pregnant women, which is a bonus, feel free to ask us questions for reassurance or signposting, as a lot of us have been in your positions, although for myself not for 22 years. My youngest will be 22 in January, so slightly out of practice! MaryF

Firstly, congrats and good luck. I had 5 MC but tested negative for APS after this, fell pregnant again in October 2018, had a stroke (caused by meningitis) on 1 December 2018 when they tested my blood again and I was APS. Ironically the stroke helped or I may have lost this one too, they put me under gynae consultant straightaway and I took aspirin and blood thinners throughout and my baby was born healthy and well so it does work (it didn't cause spotting in me), you've done the right thing in seeing your OB straightaway. Spotting in the first trimester isn't uncommon and may be implanting but if you're in any doubt ask to speak with them or see them. You'll be very closely monitored which hopefully will give you some comfort. All the best!

Congratulations, and yes, it’s a very different experience for us with APS, but many of us here have made it through with success!

There are dedicated APS specialist OBGYN gynecologists, as I’m sure you are aware, and are likely under their care.

For example, dr Natasha Jordan ( rheumatologist) at Addenbrooks / Cambridge is involved in her pregnant APS patients’ care . This is just one example . I know London has a very well respected center. I’m guessing more than one- each major hospital likely has its own. UCLH as well as Guys , etc.

It sounds like you are doing all things correctly.

We have / have had many pregnant mothers here who have posted beautiful baby pics!

Hi

I’m so sorry for your losses.

I lost 5 babies before my gorgeous daughter was born. With her, I was also diagnosed with APS prior to getting pregnant with her. I had similar treatment to you but they also had me on a high dose folic acid throughout the entire pregnancy and HcG injections for the first 17 weeks (I also have Hashimotos Disease so that was to cover my low hormone levels). This was the first pregnancy with treatment and the first one that worked! I also had a lot of brown/red bleeding for a few weeks - it turns out it was implantation bleeding but the drs put me on a semi bed rest for 3 weeks (or until it settled down) as a precaution (I could move around the house but no lifting (not even the kettle or shopping / pushing trolleys / driving etc). Don’t feel bad about taking it easy - you’re growing someone pretty spectacular in there so go easy on yourself - you don’t just need to carry on as normal - for us with APS, it’s a risky process so ignore anyone that says you’re only pregnant not ill!! My consultant said it was ok to carry on doing the things I was doing bf I got pregnant but don’t start anything new. Get plenty of rest until this settles down - once you get to around 17-20 weeks, things should be more settled. I had a scan every 2 weeks once I’d got to 12 weeks so may be worth speaking to them about that then I was induced at 38weeks (ended up with an emergency c-section after failed induction - I don’t know why I didn’t just go for that in the first place, it was marvellous!!). Hopefully the Drs will take good care of you and don’t ever feel bad for getting checked out more often than normal - if you’re concerned about anything, don’t even hesitate to nip up to the hospital. Good luck & let us know how you’re getting on!

Hi. Thanks for your reply. That was really reassuring. I will have my first scan on Monday. I really pray this goes well. I never had a successful pregnancy, i pray this one will stick. 🙏♥️

Hi, just wanted to say I'm in the same situation here in the UK (Wales). I've had four losses now and was diagnosed with APS. I'm currently 6 weeks and I'm on baby aspirin, heparin injections and pregnacare vitamins. I've not been to the Dr yet as I had syringes left over from my last loss and they said they wouldn't start injections until 7 weeks so after researching a lot and finding out so many others get started on then as soon as they get a positive, I decided not to wait. I'm going to contact the hospital next Friday. Wishing you all the luck in the world (both of us!) x

Hi. Best of luck to both of us. I bled for like a couple of hours two days ago. Now i have brown discharges. I dunno if it’s because of these medications. Btw, it’s a good thing you started early, others start during ovulation. I really pray this time our baby sticks. ♥️

Aw I have had two successful pregnancies too (two beautiful daughters) and I had implantation bleeding which was brown rather than bright red so hopefully that's what it is for you. Stay positive! x

Hi! I too had several missed and miscarriages. I was treated with Lovenox and low dose aspirin and had a perfect pregnancy. I also recall having some spotting right about the time of the month that I would have had a normal period. My doctor told me that this is common when the egg attaches (or something like that). She warned that if spotting continues that I needed to be seen right away. A friend of mine had spotting throughout pregnancy. While abnormal she still had a normal birth. I hope this brings you some reassurance. Worry is not good for your baby, so if in doubt always see your doctor. Diet is also critical for a good pregnancy. Best wishes to you and your little one.
