Ongoing nosebleed with ibuprofen and aspirin

Hi I have APS ( Fibro also ) was just wondering as I was always told to avoid ibuprofen.. but rheumatologist recently said I was okay to take ibuprofen with flare ups as the pain is just non stop with my APS and Fibro .. However , the other night I had an uncontrolled nose bleed in one nostril for several hours that required accidental and emergency. It’s like my blood was flowing out and the clots were huge - sorry for graphic detail .. It occurred to me then it might have been the ibuprofen.. didn’t want to stay in the hospital with my immune system and with what’s happening (sadly in the world 😔) .. so once they stopped it I left .. sorry for the lengthy message . Has anyone had a similar experience ? . I’m just on aspirin , betablockers ( other meds are nerve blockers , meds for balance after minor brain bleed ) but could ibuprofen and aspirin interact to cause random bleeding ( it was like water .. and was down my throat and out my nose ) again apologies for the graphic details . Thank you for any advice . And I hope everyone is keeping safe in this very worrying time.xx

I've never had a nosebleed since going on warfarin, so I dont have personal experience. But I was told that I should only take Tylenol for aches, pains and fever as Alleve and Advil can thin the blood further. Now before my hip replacement I did take Alleve round the clock for a good 2 years. That was the only way I could stand the pain snd continue with a normal life and walk. But during those years I also took a much lower dose of warfarin then I do now,

Hi can you check in with the consultant who prescribed this? Also be aware that many of us turn out to have the trio of disease (plus others), which is Hughes Syndrome/APS, Sjogrens and a Thyroid problem, often not picked up straight away as usually the only test done is the TSH, for Thyroid diagnosis. When you are next able to have blood tests, it would be a good idea to ask your doctor to test your levels of vitamin D, B12 and Ferritin, plus more detailed thryoid tests, sometimes if you ask they will do the antibodies for that, otherwise some of us order our own, but probably a bit tricky to do that currently. the-rheumatologist.org/arti... Generally NSAIDS are not considered to be a good idea, unless short term and under supervision. of a doctor, for patients with cardio vascular conditions. mayoclinic.org/diseases-con.... I hope you continue to get much better.

In the past when having to take Tylenol for multiple days, be it for fever or pain, it has messed with my INR, both my doctor and I now know if I do have to take Tylenol/acetaminophen for multiple days, I need to get my INR checked for frequently.

Thank you . Yes it’s difficult as we are in lockdown so can’t see my consultant . I did about a month ago and she ordered a full set of bloods as she suspected I had another autoimmune . She was a great rheumatologist from John Hopkins in the US . It’s just I find I’m having an ongoing dull headache and some dizziness again . Thankfully no more bleeding . My apologies I’m not familiar with some of the market names for other medications , hence why I said ibuprofen.

And I have a history of very low iron and vitamin D . I have to wear extensions as my hair fell out .

I just honestly panicked about staying for bloods with this virus and being a single mum to three children .. otherwise I would have waited for tests . I really appreciate the feedback .. the doctor in the a@e wasn’t much help . But I appreciate there is a bigger crisis now that needs to be focused on .

It’s just hard when you feel like nothing you do helps and your body is taken a bashing and being drained more daily .. thank you all . Xx

KellyInTexas has good knowledge on specialists in the USA, Low Thyroid function, low Iron, low D etc all lead to hair loss at times, so, important to act on any levels that need sorting, under the umbrella of your GP or specialist. MaryF

Hi

I’m so sorry you went thru that.

Ibuprofen and aspirin together can cause a bleed. Aspirin thins our blood and ibuprofen has the ability to thin blood so both together is very likely caused that for you. My husband had the exact same thing a few years ago., nose bleed lasted a few hours—non stop—very runny bleed. If you’ve had a minor bleed in the brain—please be careful about taking ibuprofen with you aspirin because you can get a bleed anywhere in your body, including the brain (Especially if your blood pressure gets high enough) Please speak to the specialist before taking any further ibuprofen for your pain. I hope this helps.
