Once you have one autoimmune disease you can then go on and develop others later, for instance, it took me a while to test positive for Lupus and also for Hughes Syndrome/APS, even though I was highly suspected of having them. A positive ANA is just one part of the diagnosis. MaryF

There is primary Lupus, and primary APS with “features of Lupus” because, as Mary says, APS and Lupus are in the same family. They are indeed like cousins.

A positive ANA does not necessarily mean you will definitely go on to develop full lupus along with your APS. It does mean you should be closely watched, like all of us.

It is important you be placed on Hydroxychloroquine. ( plaquinil) as it can slow down the progression of lupus, Sjögren’s, and other Autoimmune diseases that have a tendency to join up with APS ,” by as much as 10 years” according to my APS specialist in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr Graham Hughes releases a Venn Diagram detailing the relationship between SLE and APS . I posted a photo of this just a few weeks ago. If you click on my information, you will find my posts. Scroll down to the one titled Venn diagram- overlap of SLE and APS.

There are many people with a positive ANA but do NOT have SLE!

Positive ANA doesn’t diagnose SLE; a diagnosis is based on a clinical evaluation over time, which includes blood tests.

I have SLE but never had a positive ANA! Blood tests alone cannot diagnose & are not specific or sensitive enough, which is why you need a lupus specialist. Not all rheumatologists are experts in SLE.

With good wishes,

I had a positive ANA for most of my life. But I have never been diagnosed with lupus, though I do have APS. My physician Father ( who did have lupus) told me that a positive ANA serves as a suggestion to treating physicians to pay extra attention to symptoms. So, don't worry! Antibody test numbers come and go.

What I have found is that consulting with a functional med specialist, with detailed blood tests and a detox/ elimination diet pointed us all to an unknown food allergies. Me? ( As I have written here before, but still add because I remain amazed, ) CASHEWS! Not walnuts. Not almonds. Not Brazil or macadamia. Cashews! Also gluten, ( but I figured that one out myself.) But since eliminating these foods all my antibody blood markers -including ANA--have fallen to what one hematologist calls "boring." ( I think " boring" is nice. Don't you?)

The advantage of Functional Med is that they are trained to look for systemic roots of illness.

GinaD, how did you determine it was just cashews? Eliminate and reintroducing cashews resulted in physical symptoms and improved blood test results? I find this very interesting and would like to know more please.

First, the doctors ran a lot of blood tests most doctors dont even know exist. They also placed me on a elimination/ detox diet that strongly eliminated a lot of stuff. Then, those blood tests came back. Based on those results they theorized I was allergic to some high histamine food: tomatoes, eggplant, cashews. These were added to my elimination /detox diet. After some weeks I began to reintroduce foods, one at a time, according to a schedule. and I was hoping --please don't be tomatoes, please don't be tomatoes! But I added tomatoes and had no problems. Eggplant? No problem. On the first day of reintroducing cashews I had bloating, gas, fatigue and the next day, all of above plus extra toilet trips, Based on that it was obvious that it was cashews which were the silent allergen. And now

I exhibit all those boring blood count numbers. I remain on warfarin, perhaps due to paranoia, but I am asymptomatic even when my INR dips below 2. ( Back in the day I needed to be between 3-4. )

I will add that it was the specific blood tests which cued the doctors to a histamine reaction. functional medicine follows a very personal presentation. Treatment is based on each individual's specific symptoms and test results.
