APS in pregnancy - clexane injections

I am hoping to connect with someone who is/has taken clexane throughout pregnancy.

I was diagnosed with APS back in May this year due to recurrent miscarriages. Soon after i found out i had APS i found out i was pregnant so was started on 40ml Clexane injections and 75mg Aspirin daily.

I am struggling with the injections which have to be administered in the stomach, although i have been taking them since i was 5 weeks, am now 15 weeks, I just still cant believe i need to do this. i never thought id have issues with pregnancy and am so envious of other pregnant women just carrying on not having to worry about medication etc. Plus once i start to get bigger, how am i going to inject? Especially when i am all baby!

And to add o my woes, i am also suffering with Hyperemesis. This has been a miserable pregnancy so far and all i have ever wanted for years is to be a mum. It has defiantly put me off becoming pregnant ever again.

Clexane and Asprin together is the best treatment I believe, I only had heparin injections unfortunately I think because I wasn't taking Asprin as well, I lost 2 babies not sure what you do when baby takes over your tummy as I never got that far, bear with it a lovely baby at the end will make it all worthwhile

Hopefully others will tell you their successful pregnancies soon, weve had a couple of 'to be' Mums on recently, at the same stage as you. Dont despair, you are on the correct medication and sounds like you are being looked after.

Regarding clexane sites, I have injected for over 10 years, key is to alternate areas. Areas - tummy anywhere just avoid around belly button, this can go around to the back & bum (Your partner may have to help). Thighs are good in pregnancy, basically any fatty bits including love handles.

Thank you for the advice, I will try other areas once I start to get bigger.

Hello there. I have taken Clexane by tummy injections throughout two pregnancies from discovering I was pregnant to two weeks post-partum and, although it's annoying and not terribly pleasant, I promise you that it DOES get better. The bump made no difference to me, I just carried on popping that needle in alternate sides each day. Don't forget to put the needle in straight rather than at a sloping angle, I got a bit lazy and ended up with a massive bruise and a lump where the Clexane had just gathered under the surface.

I'm sorry to hear you also have Hyperemesis, and I do hope you get some respite from it soon.

It can feel like such a bind to be faffing about with injections and sharps boxes, but I promise you it's worth it. Please persevere. Best of luck with everything x

Sorry, meant to add that when I was pregnant with my first child (now 11) I was told to take Aspirin as well; when I pregnant with my second child (now 9) I was told absolutely NOT to take it; so it's worth checking with your haematologist. I would err on the side of caution and not take it unless advised to by a professional.

Your midwife will probably want to discuss the possibility of inducing you slightly early in a high-dependency unit at your local maternity ward so they can bring you off your Clexane safely first. Please don't worry about the term 'high-dependency', it sounds scarier than it is. That said, I went into labour five weeks early and had taken my Clexane that morning, and I was absolutely fine, but they did have standby in case I bled more than normal. Good luck (again!) x

Yes, love handles is the best place, but switching to your partner doing it for you in your upper thigh/bottom is a good solution, also is necessary if it all feels too much to do yourself

I've taken clexane through two full pregnancies and during the period we tried to get pregnant. I found it ok in the beginning, but it was less pleasant at the beginning of the third trimester. I changed from clexane to a different brand for the last part because I could inject them in the thigh, it was easier in the end when it was just painful to do it. I was on it from a few weeks before I got pregnant untill 6 weeks after delivery. I gave birth 13 months apart so I was on it nearly continously for 2 years.

I tried to get my partner to inject me, but it turnes out he was affraid of needles and go it in his head that the tiny needle would go in all the way to the baby... If he's comfortable with it get him to do it for you, especially if you need to do it twice a day which I had to for most of the last pregnancy.

I hope you Hyperremises would get better soon.

Hi there, congrats on your pregnancy! I am currently 12 weeks pregnant and have been on 100mg/ml clexane twice daily plus low dose aspirin daily since day 10. My first pregnancy ended in stillbirth at 30 weeks, followed by multiple pulmonary emboli, as I didn't know I had APS prior to that pregnancy. I'm thanking my lucky stars that we did know for this time round, so the injections are a very small price to pay in my view! Keep going and good luck!
