Clotting on Clexane

Hi Everyone and thankyou for your replies to my last question. This time I want to ask whether it is possible to have a clot whilst on Clexane. I have just been told in no uncertain terms i might add by a consultant at my local hospital that it is absolutely impossible to clot on Clexane. My GP says different, who is right . Thanks

Hi.

Well, I clotted on Warfarin but since I have been on Fragmin I'm not aware that I have.

Best wishes.

If you were not on a therapeutic dose it would be possible I would think. Many people are put on a prophylactic dose which is much lower.

During pregnancy for example if you have not had a clotting episode you are likely to be on a phrophylactic dose but if you have a history of clotting you are more likely to be on a therapeutic dose.

Good response tassie.

I used to keep a prophylactic dose handy for use when my INR was too low, when I was on Warfarin, now I'm off Warfarin and on a Therapeutic dose of Fragmin; for me 5,000IU and 15,000IU respectively.

It is certainly possible to clot on this kind of blood thinner. Whilst on Tinzaparin, high doses, I had major Arterial Clotting I think it was either 10 or 12 at clots in my left arm. A week in Intensive Care and surgery on all 3 main arteries in the left arm was the result. I had an amazing Surgeon and brilliant Consultants, hence the reason I am here to tell the tale with my left arm intact. It makes me feel so frustrated when I hear Doctors tell me that it is not possible to have a clot because I am on high dose blood thinners. During my last round in hospital a Consultant (not my normal one) tried to take me off Clexane and put me back on Tinzaparin (it is cheaper) then when I challenged this he marked my file as 'medication refused'.

Don't ever allow any Doctor to be complacent I am living proof that they could certainly be wrong.

My daughter had multiple clots on her lungs despite being on Clexane after breaking bones in her foot. She had been put on Clexane becasue of a family history of clotting. Doctors were reluctant to dignose PE coz she was on Clexane. Luckily our GP was on the ball and realised what was happenning.

My daughter was later diagnosed by Prof Hunt's team at St Thomas' as APS positive.

St Toms said the Clexane dose was a standard theraputic dose of post injury partients. It had not been adjusted to be the correct dose for her height and weight and for the APS. That was why she clotted over it.

Since then she has had serious operations and many interantional flights with the proper Clexane dose and has been fine. In general she is on Warferin with a stable INR.
