Costs of clexane/heparin

Just wondering what the costs are in various parts of the world for clexane/heparin?

Here in Australia I'm paying just over $36 for 10 syringes of 80mg clexane and I'm taking two shots a day. On the pack it says the full cost is $91

We r in New Zealand and Just checked Hubbys last script. Paid $5.00 for script which was was 3 repeats of 7 each time.

In NZ we never pay more than $200 for subsidised medication per family and we get to that level in 6mths these days.

other non-subsidised meds cost heaps more though.

I wish we had that system!

it is in no way a perfect system as some meds are not subsidised and sometimes you have to get generic not origional but it seems to be a workable system for the most part. we pay high taxes for the priveladge.

Adding to Tiggercat's reply for New Zealand, I found a 2009 doc from Pharmac (the governments pharmaceutical agency) that gave the price/subsidy for 80mg Clexane as about NZ$105 for 10 so roughly comparable to your full Australian price.

Hi Tassie,

In Australia you can get Clexane on an Authority Prescription which gets you 6 boxes dispensed on the one script so instead of paying $36.00 for 10 you will pay $36.00 for 60. I am gathering you aren't eligible for a Health Care Card as you are paying the full PBS price but do make sure you register with your Pharmacy for a Safety Net Card because when you have used about $700 worth of scripts for your family in a year you will get free scripts for the rest of the year. I have just kicked over to free scripts now but because I am on a Disability Pension I pay $5.60 per script and my Safety Net kicks in at $300 approximately a year.

Ask your GP or specialist next time you get your Clexane script filled to do an Authority Prescription. It will save you heaps.

Cheers,

B
