Sweet cravings vs Fruit allergy

Hi. I'm new. Just signed up tonight. My biggest problem is my sweet tooth and energy slumps. I always loved fruit, but from mid 20s I started to develop fruit allergies. It started with kiwi, then grapes, melon and now, aged 48, I can only confidently eat bananas without having to worry about swollen lips, itchy throat and itchy inner ears. I bloat with diary too. Does anyone have any ideas what I can eat to satisfy my sweet cravings without giving in to Chocolate! 😊

Hi and welcome to the group, Hidden . Thank you for introducing yourself to everyone.

Do you have an allergy to yogurt and other dairy products? You could get yogurt and mix/chop in bananas for a snack or quick breakfast/other meal. What has your doctor suggested for other fruits?

Hi. Thanks so much for the tip. GP said could be an allergy to chemical contained in some fruits but it's never gone any further so I avoid. I ate tinned fruit for a while but they aren't the best haha

Yes, some canned/tinned fruits have more sugar in them than if you ate the fruit that's not in the can. They add sugar water to the fruit and that can raise the blood sugars in some people. I try to avoid buying any canned fruits because of that main reason ( I have type 1 Diabetes).

What about a mini bar or a few squares of dark chocolate? Gives you a good cocoa hit with much less sugar so it’s less likely to trigger cravings.

Hi Hidden

Welcome to the Healthy eating forum. I looked at your profile, and noticed you're doing the NHS 12 week plan - there's a recipe in Week 9 of that plan that uses bananas in a cake - so that might be something you'd enjoy?

Look down the page to the second part, and you'll see the recipe:

I hope you have a lovely weekend, and let us know how you get on.

Hello and welcome, I am also trying to overcome sweet cravings after giving up alcohol I suddenly developed a sweet tooth, I was eating biscuits cake even them children's sweets as I call them, I would never have imagined I could eat again as havnt since was a child,so sweet, I ended up fancying a bag of mixed nuts I saw in supermarket with the big sultanas, I have a few after my lunch instead of a biscuit or sometimes a few to nibble when I'm fancying sweet things they fill me up and solve the craving, and that's s lot to do with it well so I read, and protein hence the nuts helping, your body is needing some energy so it craves sugar,I'm hardly having any sweet things now no sweets I just have a little chocolate for supper sometimes, I read a hot bath or shower gets rid of the sugar craving or glass water a lot of it as most things is to do with mind training they say it takes a month to break a habit, if your not allergic to nuts or sultanas I'd try them, I like the combination I particularly love big sultanas I'm going to look up there properties, I hope this site helps you 🤗

Thanks So much for all your tips and information. Im buying sultanas today! And I'm you g to look for small ani.al bars or milky bars and have just 1 in a day when I can't resist😀 I've had a sweet tooth since the days of the dummy. Chocolate always has my Achilles heal. I need to retrain my brain. Thanks again all. Have s good weekend 😊

Hi there,

Whenever I want a sweet craving I always turn to Fibre one bars , skinny whip bars, Alpen light bars or rice cakes not only these are low in calories they come in a variety of flavours.

I would recommend the lemon drizzle or caramel fibre one bar .

Sorry you can't eat all fruit ! It must be difficult coz I can't imagine a healthy diet without fruit .
