Hi my name is Rebecca. I am a new member of this blog/forum and I am very excited to speak to people who have the same interests as mine regarding trying to stay fit and healthy. I am a licensed personal trainer as well as experience in nutrition planning for those with goals that can range from losing weight to toning ... all the way up to gaining muscle mass. I would love to speak with anyone here in the forum even if it’s not for advice.

Hi I’m sorry bout the late reply. I’m very happy to be on this forum. Like I said in my “bio” lol... I definitely do not claim to know all the answers to everything, but I get joy about talking of things that I do know. I look forward to getting to know you! 😊

Welcome to this group....I am personally very happy to have you. I am a vegetarian and must get more Vitamin B-12 into my diet. What do I do to achieve this! I need help! Panz 🙏☘️💕😍

Hi thank you for being so inviting...I’m really happy to be on a site where I can talk about my favorite things. I know you said you were a vegetarian... congrats on that!!! 👌I am not a vegetarian, or a vegan...I’m just me. I have been a health nut for years and even though we aren’t on the same diet, I am sure I eat some of the same things as you!! Lol. I know you mentioned getting more B-12. I suffer from IBS-c, which is embarrassing to talk about; however I take a b-12 supplement sublingually everyday. You can get it from Walgreens, CVS, etc. I love it because you take a dropper , let it sit under your tongue for 30 seconds, then swallow. It’s not harsh at all!!! And, I personally feel amazing after! Maybe each person is different. Just try it. Let me know.😉

Panz in reply tobecca1279

Thank you so very much for this info and yes I am going to try it. Where would I find it at a CVS and hat might I expect to pay? How much would I take?

I am getting B-12 from supplements:

Multiple vit. 100 mcg

Rx iron 10 mcg

Added together it is 4334% of daily requirement now these are from two totally different sources.

Panz 🙏☘️💕😍

becca1279 profile image
becca1279 in reply toPanz

This supplement is from Nature Bounty in the vitamin and supplements section. It has 1200 mcg of B-12 and also a few other healthy vitamins like niacin. The last time I got it at a Walgreens it was BOGO, but single one cost around $10-$12. Just take one full dropper full and let it sit under tongue for at least 30 seconds. Hope this helps! 😉

Hi I was wondering if you had a chance to try the B-12 supplement we talked about. Hope you are doing ok!!!😊

Yoginut profile image
Yoginut in reply toPanz

Unless you are a strict vegan there is no likelihood of you becoming B12 deficient and even stict vegans can get pretty much all they need from fortified products, like plant milks, and nutritional yeast (Engevita). While B12 is essential we don't need that much so I shouldn't worry. But if you are worried then I'd get a blood test done 😊

Panz profile image
Panz in reply toYoginut

Thank you, Yoginut, my blood is tested once a month and I run a normal low so I feel I am fine, however, upon research I ran across that for Low ANC an increase of B-12 might help. My ANC has been in sow fall for sometime but I am at an alert low this time at .99. So I thought I might give B-12 a try.

I eat a lot of nuts and nutritional yeast goes in everything....so I am not expecting miracles but will give it a try. I have had CLL for sometime and I think it is what it is. I am going on 31 years. I am currently back to Watch and Wait and that is a super place to be!

Thanks again,

Panz 🙏😍☘️💕💗

Hi thanks for your post (I think). I received my certification in 2008; however, I have a mother who suffers from insulin dependent Diabetes and when you say “conventional” I take what would seem to be a conventional method for her but yet trick her into eating things she likes, getting rid of some, and putting her into a “way of life” .. not a diet, that she can do and not stray because it was too much too fast. Each person is different and the method you approach is key in their success. Getting to know an individual let’s me know how aggressive I can be.

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administrator in reply tobecca1279

Does your mother count carbs. and eat low carb high protein? I’m type 1 who uses insulin and a CGM along with a low carb high protein diet to control the blood sugars during the day and evening hours.

becca1279 profile image
becca1279 in reply toActivity2004

Well, I count her carbs, ahead of time, tell her what she can have IF she sticks to the plan. I give her substitutions so that she doesn’t feel trapped into something, ya know? Her main problem in the past has been sweets( bread- related ), like pastries, Swiss rolls, nut bread, etc...So in answer to your question in the morning she is very hungry so I have taught her to make a high powered breakfast so that she can have those 6 doses of food a day (meals and snacks) to avoid a spike in her blood sugar to avoid her previous binging activity.

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administrator in reply tobecca1279

For breakfast, I have 2 hard boiled eggs and a Greek yogurt each day when I’m home. On trips, I eat high protein foods that are provided by the hotel where I stay.

Hi I saw your post...if you read my short bio I’m not claiming I know EVERYTHING. It’s really the amount of time that I have personally spent with things that has given me knowledge more than a certification. I love living healthy , learning new things every day , and if I can in the process help someone else , then that makes me happy. ☺️

becca1279 profile image
becca1279

That is true; however when you are dealing with someone who doesn’t take the disease seriously, as I was talking about my mother, she don’t get it ok? That is why, instead of worrying about her binging, which I know she will, I have given her alternatives that she will ACTUALLY STICK TO, and that is MY biggest concern for her, as well as her MD.

Helping supporting others is good Becca. I am trying to help others with similar med problems as I. For example advanced prostate cancer stage4, AFIB, SCA, Superpolyneuropathy for a few. Right now I'm trying to find or re-find a Behavioral Nutritionist Fitness support person for my health.

becca1279 profile image
becca1279 in reply todepotdoug

Wow! That is a amazing! If you don’t mind me asking what health problems personally or from family have you faced? Omg... if I gave you a rundown of my family history it would be quite a read!! Each parent of mine has suffered greatly from the effects of some very harsh realities that neither one were ready to deal with. Sometimes I didn’t think they even cared. I lost my father in 2008 for something that may well could have been prevented. However, our relationship unfortunately was non- existent and I live 4 counties away. My mother in the other hand is really starting to embrace what I have to share and the meal plans I have in place for her are really motivating her, which is all I could ever ask for as I keep educating her in the process.

depotdoug profile image
depotdoug

What a life we live and live.

A brief summary of med problems. Brief? You already know.

1. SCA cardiac arrest May12,2011. exactly 3 months from the day I stopped drinking alcohol. Go figure.

2. Long term alcohol use/daily for 30+/- years took a toll on my health -Stopped drinking 02/12/2011. Checked into an outpatient behavioral health substance abuse program 2 months. Yeh I was having SOB(shortness of breath) dizzy spells, almost passing out 2010-2011 but did not have a clue why. SCA Dx was termed NSVT(non-sustained ventricular tachycardia. 12 days in the CICU + 6 in rehab took a toll on my body.

3. 1st ICD/pacemaker 05/17/2011 5 days post SCA now on my 2nd device 01/17/2019.

4. 2010 DX superpoly-neuropathy verified by an EMG test.

5. Dx persistent AFIB 2013, went on blood thinners and heart rhythm meds until

6. I had cryo-ablation April 2014. That was supposed to isolate my RA electrical signals misfiring in my Pulmonary upper heart veins.

7. 3 Cardioversions - have been AFIB free since last cardioversion July 2016.

8. Prostate cancer Dx 2005 had 42 IMRT radiation zaps.

9. At radiation CT scanning they found I had an enlarged bladder. Ooops. Add neurogenic bladder, urinary retention to my med problem list.

10. I'm on my 2nd Medtronic Interstim Neurostimulator trying to alleviate my UR issue. It is not working. 2 implants DOA.

11. 2 DVIUs' leading to urethral stricture(due to IMRT radiation 2005) repair surgery March2017. Successful Yes!

12. Presently taking Abiraterone(Zytiga) Prostate Cancer chemo drug, Lupron hormone injections and Prednisone.

13. History of Hypertension long term, anxiety meds.

And still exercising twice(2x's) daily.

I'm in serious need of a nutritionist / behavior accountability person.

Thanks for responding for me becca1279. I've vented enough for a night.

Does your doctor want you to see a Nutritionist/Dietician?

depotdoug profile image
depotdoug in reply toActivity2004

Yes, and a joint concurrent decision. My PCP and I after November OV decided I really need to lose about 12-15 #'s. That does not sound like much to most older adults, I'm 68 in a month. Since I'M on my 3rd re-currence of prostate cancer, now Stage 4/metastatic with treatment of ADT hormone meds, chemo med's my weight trending is up. Not much only 12-15#'s. To the point I'm an eat healthy green vegetables, lean meats, protein foods daily.

And exercising 2x daily. My estimated calorie burn per day is 2800-3000. That's a lot of exercising and burning fat, turning some into muscles, but not loosing the #'s.

I was once back in Oct 2015 255#'s ! Now down to 187#'s.

Hope that helps. Doug

Do you eat low carb items?

depotdoug profile image
depotdoug in reply toActivity2004

I'm trying. But not so good. I love my Nature Valley granola bars post exercise and Skinny Popcorn. Honestly I've tried the OPTIVIA health diet plan for 2.5 months with little or no results. I did succeeded on the OPTIFAST program at a medical facility Oct2015-Mar2016. Lost 74.5#'s. Why can I not loose 12-15#'s and maintain now??

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administrator in reply todepotdoug

Sometimes, a person’s metabolism changes over time and what we had done for years ago sometimes stops working for no good reason, unfortunately. I had stopped eating anything made with wheat after 4.5 years now. If I eat anything with wheat, my stomach has cramps that keep me from moving easily.

depotdoug profile image
depotdoug in reply toActivity2004

Guess that's why I need a metabolic nutritionist registered dietitian. Metabolism is a mess from my Cancer med's, exercising, and getting older.

Hi again, I have really been thinking of what all you have gone through and are still going through. I think for one......you need to just breathe! Take a small break from your worries, regroup, and let’s come up with a plan. How does that sound? You definitely need a mental break before it breaks you.

becca1279 profile image
becca1279 in reply todepotdoug

I was wondering what your doctor has exactly told you to abstain from? Given your history a nutrition plan would definitely be on the “cautious “ zone, but I would definitely be willing to help you with a plan as soon as I know what your dr has recommended. I already have ideas in mind for you because I truly want to help you. 😊

depotdoug profile image
depotdoug in reply tobecca1279

My primary care doctor knows and did agree to me starting, no trying the OPTIVIA Healthy Lean and Green diet plan program. It's a planned daily diet of 4 of the Optivia food supplements(fuelings) with two(2) 'lean and green' real meals daily. I tried that for Dec2019-Jan2020. The major program was that no I did not like it, I was burning 2800-3100 calories per day exercising including my daily living metabolism.

If you(me) don't like a healthy diet nutrition plan or support or burn more calories than allowed to eat. Something has to change.

Let's go backward to Oct 2015-March2016, I was on The OPTIFAST medically supervised monitored by my local hospital Lutheran Weight Management Team for 6+ plus months. It worked, I lost 74.5#'s and still exercised and succeeded. Yeh, Its the national Optifast weight loss program with their shakes, nutrition bars, soups, which transistioned into healthy eating in month 4 & 5.

One thing a prostate cancer advanced person does not want to eat is lots of dairy products and definitely no fat foods. With me taking Abiraterone(Zytiga) and prednisone meds I'm obligated to take those pills with a low fat breakfast diet.

So, I return to my PCP physician in 25 days and see what where he says I'm at.

Honestly Becca, I know healthy meals, veggies, and lean meats. Its more of combining healthy meals with my exercising life. Yes, I love skinny popcorn and nature valley granola bars maybe too too much. An accountability partner, yes that's a must have.

More later. Thanks for supporting me.

I am not giving up.

Ok are you aware of how many calories a day you burn at rest? And there are a few different stages... are you active during the day? Are you sedentary? There is a a formula that will tell you based off of your regular activity how may calories you will burn at rest based off your body weight. Let’s say for example my mother is 210 lbs. her body weight given that it’s more sedentary than active would be calculated at 10. 210 times 10 would be 2100 calories that she burns every day at rest. Now.. if you are active you can change that to 13. Just know that you are burning calories whether toy like it or not on a daily basis. But with a health regimen in place you will be on top of the world. I see you really care about your health. Makes me happy! 😊

depotdoug profile image
depotdoug in reply tobecca1279

First yes I’m very active during the day until. Brief power nap ~ 3-4pm. Then it’s full speed ahead till 11:00pm. Love the energy I have do not want to loose it, with my cancer treatment meds and future health...

I’ve heard of I think a Met-X metabolic measurement test. Time to calculate my resting cal burned calories exercising calories burned.

I’ve got charts tracking exercising and resting calories burned used.

1. On my FITBIT BLAZE

2. On my APPLE S4 super exercise watch.

Never knew the difference btw resting and exercising.

Time for some comparison caloric calculation. Say that three times.

Will stay in touch.

Ok......I have sooooooo much to tell you and like said earlier, I so want to help you. It breaks my heart to hear what you have gone through; however it also breaks me heart to see how you have been manipulated into these (I’m sure... high priced ) programs . I can see that you have been pressured into things that seem like “it’s the only way” and that is completely untrue. All it takes , even through all the things you have been through , is a regimen of things that you are not going to pay high price for. I am so excited to help you if you let me! 😊

True but the Optifast medical program did work well. It was at a medical facility right across from our home. That’s still available but,! I’ve got the skills and knowledge from the successful Optifast program. Support was great and us still available. Why can I not go forth with healthy solid proven food behavior eating?

becca1279 profile image
becca1279 in reply todepotdoug

Oh well I’m glad that you are on a great plan. However... I just want you to think about one thing. Yes it may work and you think it’s the best plan ever ...but have you ever counted the calories they have you on?... and I mean total protein , fat, carbs, etc.. let me know if you would like my input... just watching out for you.

becca1279 profile image
becca1279 in reply tobecca1279

The reason I say that is because many of these”programs “ get you in and when you think about It from the outside looking in... its a scam to make you pay money. Let me give you an example . My sister wanted to lose about 15 or so pounds so she decided to join this stupid club that not only PUT HER ON A DIET OF 3500 calories a day and she was only 148 lbs!!!!!r

I’m finished with my OPTIVIA DIET heath plan as of this week. I cancelled my Order for end of Feb(March) . I did not tell my OPTIVIA health coach yet. He and they will know if they haven’t already because they are not getting any more money. Cancelled done deal.

I even went to the point of telephone and email contacting OPTIVIA office reps to close my account out ASAP.

I can not as of Thursday login to my account or try to reset my OPTIVIA password. It will not let me. I’ve still have some OPTIVIA OPtimal shake and smoothie pkgs I’ll use for post exercising energizer drinks.

Next I’ve thought about the OPTIFAST Medical program this week but have not, have not, made any decision yet. They do have dietitian help and healthy eating behavioral support available. But I’m not going back there yet.

As far as the correct amount of Protein foods and low fat foods I need, I have no idea.

If I continue to burn 2800-3000 calories per day with my double exercising routines and staying active I do need the right diet nutrition calorie protein and fiber mix.

Monday I will also message my PCP doctors office and nurse. They respond quite rapidly. So do you.

Lots of things to think about and understand. Will keep you updated.

Like I’ve said I know what to eat healthy but how much to sustain my metabolism and loose ##’s I’ve got I idea.

I’m not going back to OPTIVIA.

Well surprise to hear from a strong healthy person again, Becca. I just returned from my large Church meeting group this eve. Pretty interesting subject; Congregation meeting to provide inputs for a new senior pastor, replacing in the next 1-2 years our senior pastor that has been there for 25 years, 9 years in my life, wonderful life! So Pastor Rick, he says to just call him Rick and know each other quite well, Same age 5months apart I’m 67&11 months he 67.5 years. What I’m getting at is we each and everyone of us human beings have friends and supporters and compassionate friends to lean on. Listen to talk to, care about, love.

I shared some of my life story tonight with a few people in our church advisory pastoral search group of about 120 varied people.

Life is a struggle at times we can survive with the love surrounded by friends, this group or whoever we decide to share.

Love it that you are a licensed fitness trainer and Nutritionist coach Becca.

Like I said Sat eve your always so welcoming a light of support to those you touch, me too!

Becca But I’ve got so so much energy plus Exercising is my anxiety reliever, not alcohol, not TV, not sitting . My(our LIVESTRONG) team leader yesterday AM 9:30-11 @ YMCA just talked and read a serious message on Rest, Rest, Rest. The body needs rest. 👍 Ok.

I’ve got PCP doctors appointment March 5th then March 10th with my Med ONC in Indianapolis.

Exercising too my stress reliever. I really didn’t want to get into this with anyone but I struggled with alcohol as a way to mask things that I was going through in my life for a while. I never was a pill popper, or anything else, just alcohol seemed to take away all of the things that I needed to face. I have a seizure disorder, not alcohol related, that I have struggled with also. I was sure the alcohol did not help. Even though I had everything going for me, a successful career, a husband who adored me, but I still had issues from my past that needed to be dealt with. Luckily my strong values in health and exercise and helping others achieve their goals got me out of my depression. Not to say that what I eventually need to deal with isn’t serious, I will not self medicate in the process.

Amen, really well put and thought out Becca. I will graciously get my 9 year CR(Celebrate Recovery) coin in 17 days at my Churches CR meeting. Celebrating my recovery and our recovery without medicating our human bodies.. Thank you for your authenticity, honesty and strength for your struggles.

It’s been a tough last week. 2 weeks ago I quit the OPTIVIA weight/healthy nutrition program. I was burning more calories than the program foods, supplements was giving me! Not good.

Last week Wed eve I went back into AFIB atrial fibrillation, that i was free of since July 2016. Drov emyself with my wife to our local close hospital ER spent till midnight in ER. Blood tests, EKG, X-ray. Everything. Then was admitted overnight all day Thursday waiting for a cardio doc consult confined to my cardiac telemetry floor room. Finally saw a cardiologist then my EP Electrophysiologist doc @ 8:30PM. Friday 9 AM i had a Cardioversion in one of the cath labs. I’m now in NSR (normal sinus rhythm ) Good news yeh, but I’m so so upset about lack of communications between Doctors, hospital stag, Hospitalist, Internal med drs. All everyone of my nursing care team were wonderful but no not a bit of coordination from Doctors, to when am i going to get out, discharged. Do I seem like I’m angry, YEH!! Darn right. I’ll address those issues Mon and Tues with the appropriate hospital management people. I am just so frustrated at dis-organized chaos in my hospital stay it makes me feel terrible. I keep in touch. Bad experience in my favorite hospital NO just the management .

Thank you becca1279...

Battles, battles, one is too too many. You are so so right, Becca.

I to had a battle last week went to my fav heart hospital ER 5:30PM AFIB reared its ugly head again(battle in itself) pounding chest, pressure, hard to breathe, mind not functioning fully, HR and BP all over the place inside my body. I had angst, anxiety, frustration, energy rampant, and confined to ER room without any hope. But AFIB confirmed and I was advised to stay overnight really till last Fri afternoon. I was not a happy camper... so to speak . Friday 09:00 I had my cardioversion ( I shock) to my heart in a cardiac Cath Lab then back to my room for confinement.

I felt wonderful back in Normal Sinus Rhythm (NSR) But my anxiety and anger was escalating, when are they(the huge hospital) staff entangled in No Communications between Specialist(s), Staffffffffff, RN's, Hospitalists. No nothing no feedback - no one knew when I was or might get released! I tried twice to rip off my ID wrist band with my lead nurse trying to scold me.. she said if you remove that band I'll have to put another one on so we know who you are. You're kidding me. Did I win my battle, Yes and No. Is the war over? Well a phone call after lunch to the hospital may help. My discharge instructions state: "We Commit To You" If you have any questions please call _____________#.

Standy by for further battle results.

I wish you luck with the call to the hospital Staff today. Hopefully, someone can give you an explanation to what was going on when you were staying there. Are you feeling a little better today?

Better yes! I exercised Sat AM, Sun AM, Monday AM, at my LIVESTRONG cancer survivors, patients(me) YMCA group. Plus this morning at Planet Fitness gym, cant you tell I love my exercising. My tag name is E.E.C. Doug aka excessive exercising compulsion Doug.

Life is good when your heart is good. I'm up for my hospital phone call after lunch.

It may be more than one call or even a meeting visit soon. I've been extremely persistent in my life (medical and physical) since my SCA cardiac arrest May 2011. And since my advance prostate cancer stage 4 metastatic Dx Sept 2019 my persistence is more persistent. Guess you get the idea. I just got my PCP physicians appt up'd from March 5th to Feb 25th yesterday, because they(PCP) staff know my situation, being on blood thinners, and the troubles I had at the hospital. THat's good news, I love my IU Health PCP doctor. EP NP office visit this Friday, then my Med Onc return visit in Indy IU Simon Cancer Center March 9/10. FInaly my cardiologist visit March 17th. Is that enough med folks to listen to me?

Thanks for checking on me.

Thanks Activity2004, Yes i will, love to share my experience and life, healthy lifestyle. Since back home Friday 3PM I’ve been trying to calm and collect my thoughts, mind moods, and relax. Could not relax in a cardiac hospital room. Not gonna happen. I do have names, professional positions of some of the medical people that treated me; but that’s was not the Anxiety block issue. It’s like i said “no communication between Doctors, RN’s staff, a hospitalist(whatever that is) and ME! I shall compose myself tonight and tomorrow and try to rest...
