Hellooo to all. Just one quick question. Is porridge in the morning with fresh berries, banana, flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, sprinkle of tumeric spice and cinnamon spice with skimmed milk on top a good heart healthy meal to start the day? I ask this because I find porridge one of those foods that devides soooo many. Thankyou for reading all have a great day

Morning Red

I eat porridge regularly. Infact I've just had mine, along with my heart meds😢😢 There are certain people that say it spikes your glucose but I eat only organic oats normally with oat milk but at times dairy.

On this one,I believe the benefits outway the negatives so I will continue to eat it,often with a big dollop of organic peanut butter (Good fats" Don't panic you die hard bhf supports)😁😂😂I'm doing what's right for me.

Enjoy it Red

Hi Rob. Thanks for replying. I do enjoy my porridge but those that follow the keto diet do not agree. That confuses me a little as I want to eat right for my heart health but then worry about the sugar spike....

Well Red dare I mention he's name on here for fear of reprisals, but Ivor Cummings himself actually messaged me and agreed that the organic oats are fine.As long as you don't start adding all the other stuff like honey etc.

And you know he's the keto advocate at the moment. So take that as you will.

I measure mine and probably have 50g so that gives me about 20g of carbs and to me that's fine as long as I don't go over my max of around 100 a day I'm happy.I haven't gone keto but more low carb and good fats as much as possible.

Ivor Cummings is sooo informative. Really like him.. I use Aldi's organic Kavanagh's oats. I may just have a very small banana too with my porridge in the mornings from now on.... Had my sugars done and they were 35mmoI/l I think that is ok

I love my “porridge” but since switching to LCHF the oats part as been reduced to 15g only - I no longer believe the “good for your heart” marketing ploy 😀 The bulk of my porridge is then made up with coconut flour, chia, ground flax, pumpkin seeds, cinnamon as a sweetener. A dollop of coconut oil and full fat milk. Gorgeous (especially with blueberries on top)

Almost all of that I put in my porridge

But like you I've cut back on the grams of porridge I have.

I just love a dollop of organic peanut butter and natural coconut flakes

Natural coconut flakes - sound good, I’ll have to see if my supermarket sells them :)

Hi Red18

I also think that a porridge breakfast with all those lovely ingredients you listed is a good heart healthy meal to start the day. I eat it regularly myself - most days infact. I pick the Giant Organic oats as my oats of choice. I love this breakfast.

Your breakfast sounds really delicious.

Zest :-)

My gran ate porridge every morning her entire life, with a pinch of salt and a dribble of milk. She lived to a ripe old age of 89, so I've always considered it to be a good breakfast food.

If you are concerned about its impact on blood sugar though, I would consider cutting back on the fruit toppings. Most nutritionists tend to recommend eating no more than 3 portions of fruit per day, due to the sugar, and you are using 2 of those with breakfast. Bananas are particularly sugary.

Hi Cooper27 I do worry about the sugar spike but I am of the understanding that eating the fruits alongside the walnuts. Chia seeds and flaxseeds stabilize the sugars?? Not sure..

Cooper27 profile image

It possibly does, but I'm not familiar enough with blood sugar variations to say.

Because it "divides so many", you're going to get different answers :)

Porridge has a moderate GI, but because it's eaten in a fairly large serving, it presents a high glycemic load. Diabetics find that it's one of the worst foods for spiking their blood sugar, which means that (for a 'normal' person) your body will attempt to store most of it as bodyfat and recycle it later. As Cooper27 said, sugary toppings can exacerbate this problem.

If you're relatively active, or you're young and of normal bodyweight, there's probably nothing wrong with porridge. If you're sitting in an office all day, if you're overweight, or have a family history of Type 2 diabetes, you'd probably be better off with eggs and bacon.

My personal objection to porridge is that it just looks and tastes like wallpaper paste (not that I go around eating wallpaper paste ... I'm just guessing at the flavour). But each to their own, I guess.

I'd drop the skimmed milk, though. Have proper milk. Processed foods, by and large, are not an improvement on the natural version, despite what the manufacturers would like you to believe. Dairy companies like people buying skimmed, because they can sell the product twice: once as cream, and again as skimmed milk (which, once upon a time, was a waste product destined for pigfeed).

There's a fine art to proper porridge making, but you can get a very tasty/sweet bowl by just adding a good pinch of salt to the oats before cooking them. Soaking oats overnight with salt also helps :)

It sounds pretty good to me except for the skimmed milk as I just don’t like the taste (lack of taste really) but you’ve got some fat from the seeds. I find oats don’t spike my blood sugars if I eat them with full fat Greek yoghurt instead of milk.
