As we have some amazing photo's of porridge on here I thought some of you might be interested in this as there's a lot of history about porridge dating back 5000 years. The competition is on the 11th and 12th October the day after World Porridge day on the 10th. WPD day was started by the charity Mary's Meals which wants to wipe out food poverty by seeing that children have a healthy breakfast to start the day.
I've heard of spurtles, they're a close cousin of the haggis, right?
I actually have one, but still can't make porridge as good as my gran's (no one makes porridge quite like your granny did though). It's also useful for cheese sauce.
We actually had a debate in the work kitchen about the proper ingredients to put on porridge this morning. Maybe that's a new poll idea! There's lots of options
Hey I guessed right. I love porridge 🥣 in Scotland they used to have porridge drawers where they used to keep the porridge for a week in the drawer and some farmers used to have a slice of the cold porridge instead of a sandwich for work 🙂
I am fascinated by the number of replies and interested parties on the subject of "porage". I only spell it that way, as mentioned earlier, we had Scott's Porage Oats as a wee lad and the packaging quite clearly said "porage"
However I should also remember that as a child we think of childish things...........etc
Lovely to hear about a "spurtle", that is a new one on me. My mother used a big wooden spoon the wrong way round for initial stirring of the porridge; then rinsed under the tap was used the correct way round for serving.
I was then something of a heathen. I would wait a few moments whilst waiting for the porridge to set, pausing longingly at my steaming bowl, at times hard to contain myself. Blowing through the steam to make it settle all the quicker............ and then the contest began! With milk bottle held oh so steady, dribbling the milk around the circumference of the porridge to see how little I could use to get my porage to float.
It was a delicate operation, for if the porridge had not set, the milk would mix and totally spoil the whole set-up. I would have to wait another day for the exciting challenge.
I am not obsessed with porridge, just thoroughly enjoy the fact that it helps my dieting. I am no longer a child so spoiling my porridge with milk is a no no. I have to admit though, a little drizzle of "oatmeal milk" has been tried out for effect, and good it was too.
It would almost be worth establishing a PORAGE COMMUNITY
and so I thank you my hearty sharers of such a Divine Breakfast
