Hi folks,

Here’s a link about vegetable oils.

Good or bad? I try to avoid them when I can.

It’s all very confusing. I have to say I do use olive oil.

Olive oil, extra virgin olive oil, is supposedly the best to use as well as coconut oil and some other oils.

It’s not just vegetable oils alone though, seed oils are also bad news.

With olive oil, you can grab an olive, squeeze it and oil comes out.

Can you do this with a vegetable? No.

That’s good as I only use olive oil and coconut oil. Yes you’re right there isn’t much oil in a vegetable although the oil is produced from the seeds.

But this is just it, you can look up on Wikipedia or some other website and it will tell you that vegetable oils come from the seeds of the plants when other sources will tell you how the oil is extracted from the seeds... using chemicals which is in no way natural. Whether the chemicals used are safe or not safe, that isn’t the main point.

The main point is that vegetable oils are not natural.

Confusing might be an understatement regarding many reports I read. Mind blowing, informational overload would be more appropriate for me. My choice is Unfiltered, First Cold Press, Extra Virgin, 100% Organic Olive Oil that I enjoy and use sparingly as opposed to the total immersion and inhalation, 24/7/365 since my first gasp 69 years, 4 months and 18 days ago of the polluted air we all breathe having few choices for other options.

Hi Matt, I think the real problem is we have created an imbalance in our nutrition because of processing methods and assume that because it says vegetable oil it is going to be good for us. And I know how strongly you feel about these things. 😊

Oh yes, because it is named ‘vegetable oil’ people think it’s good. So wrong.

People are fooled, that is what I feel anyhow.

Margarine is no good as it has vegetable oil in it and it also has trans fats in them too which is dangerous and can clog up arteries.

I don’t think the problem is that WE have created an imbalance but more likely THEY... the corrupt ones.

I would suggest anything that is heavily processed and/or has never been eaten by humans before should be treated as suspect. Most modern vegetable oils meet both of those criteria.

I'm not sure it's helpful to divide the world neatly into things that are "good" and "bad" because things are often a bit more complicated than that, but humanity has never had access to "vegetable oils" in the quantities they are now sold, and certainly not at the prices they now sell for.

Back in the day, animal fats were the norm, because they were cheap, stable, and readily-available. The only vegetable oils that have been historically consumed are olive oil, palm oil (several types), and coconut oil, and those were all comparatively expensive because of the effort required to produce them.
