Sounds like a delicious substitution. Dried apricots are also delicious.

When we are talking substitution what goal are we after? Carbon footprint, colour, texture, sugars, nutritional value, mixing ability? I always considered figs as equivalent to dates on the sugar front. Key for me is nutritional value and dates have more antioxidants than most fruits, and lots of iron and potassium.
