Our holy month of Ramadan will start on Monday! Looking forward to it...but it doesn't feel the same as it to others because I'm unable to fast because of my diabetes 😞...the atmosphere around me will make me feel like the others will feel,but it's so much better fasting like everybody else..some people in here might understand?

I know your family will understand about you not fasting. For me, I can’t fast, either since my blood sugars would drop too fast. My parents and brother fast for Yom Kippur (Jewish holiday).

Are you type 1 or type 2?

Type 1 one insulin shots.

Same as me then. My sister has recently been told she has diabetes and only just getting used to her novorapid n still not used to it. But really wants to fast. Hey nurse surprisingly told her she will give her bolus basal injections just for Ramadan! I was shocked but my sister was quite pleased and surprised too. I warned her about the hypos etc but she said she wants to give it a try. It's staying hungry from 3.00am till 10.00pm 🙈

If she is using insulin, it’s not a good idea to fast. What dose is the Nurse going to have your sister use for the fasting hours? She will have to lower the doses during the day after she talks to her doctor about how much is needed. No one wants to have a hypo./low.

Hi SID123, I think that you should be able to celebrate the spiritual reflection aspect of Ramadan with out fasting due to your diabetes as your diabetes is 24/7 so you have to look after your health and here's a link from Diabetes UK regarding this:

I completely understand, however what counts most is your intention. You can contribute by cooking healthy meals for the family and engage in extra worship, it'll certainly help you feel better.
