Hi Sarah,

Unfortunately there are a million and one opinions on this topic right now. There are books, YouTube videos, documentaries and on and on. It seems on the surface that most any diet out there will work for a while. I think you need to figure out what you can stick with the rest of your life. It’s not about losing weight, it’s about a lifestyle change. Can you afford a gym or trainer? Sometimes that can motivate you, being accountable to someone weekly.

Good luck, let us know how you are doing! Karen

Hi Karen

I have tried a gym and a trainer and just felt really intimidated by the two inch wide perfect women in there. My friend and I are going to start doing this at lunch times

in reply toSarahNearly50

you dont really need the gym if its just weight lose you need.

i put on 15 killos, thats 32 pounds thats a lot of extra weight as i was only 70 killos before that.

i am now 72 killos and i think this weight suites me and am happy to stay at this weight.

i did not change my diet in anyway other then rejuice the amount of food i was eating in one day back to only what i needed to stay healthy, looking better and feeling better.

my increased weight gain was due to depression and comfort eating.

the depression is still there, and it will always be there as theres nothing i can do about that.

Hi,

I understand totally. Gyms can put me off too. I have been on prednisone for two years and have managed to avoid weight gain by walking. I am now selfish about getting my walk in. At first I only walked a couple miles a day but now I walk 4-5 miles every day no matter the weather. Exercise makes you feel stronger and better about yourself so you will naturally eat better food. Wishing you the best, karen

You are right to be selfish. To get health back is a challenge that is worth every moment.

Unless you have health issues that block weight loss, then as you get closer to a whole-food plant based diet you will find weight loss becomes easier and effortless - and all without counting calories once you are on the lifestyle fully.

Hi Sarah. My aim this year is to lose 6 stone. I’ve tried all sorts of things but by far the best as it’s not about a short term fix is the nhs 12 week plan. It’s made me realise that portion size plays a huge factor and writing stuff down helps you understand what you have eaten during the day and what calories you have left when you get home from work. Trying to guess as I have down on the odd day doesn’t work. Couple that with exercise and I’m sure you will see the weight come off in a healthy way and a sustainable way. I’m three months down and have lost over two stone and I know this is achievable even in days when your not well and overeat and don’t exercise. Good luck on your journey

Morning

I started weight loss by simply walking and tracking what I ate with an app. Hitting the required calories the app told me I had for a day gave me a bit of motivation.

As for recipes - I started with the Hairy Dieters books. Still use them now actually. Food packed with flavour without the usual eat nothing nonesense.

My husband also needs to lose some weight...and he has tried lots of things. I feed him very healthily at home...but he stays in London sometimes during the week. There is a lady called Louise Parker...a couple of my friends have worked with her. She seems to work miracles. My husband won't see her because he says she's annoy him...and she's ridiculously expensive...BUT she has written a book called The Louise Parker Method...and he's lost a couple of stone following her rules!! It might help? Look on Amazon. Good luck!

Hi Sarah,

I have found that the NHS 12 week plan is helpful as a means to lose weight and if you want to have a look at it, then here is a link to NHS Choices website 'NHS 12 week plan':

nhs.uk/LiveWell/Loseweight/...

It's free, and I would also recommend maybe joining the NHS weight loss forum (here on Health Unlocked) for additional support, if you like the idea of a weekly weigh-in, or other support.

Good luck with your goals, and wishing you a great week.

Zest :-)
