Why do i get ill for weeks or months after drinking alcohol?

Depending on how much i drink i can be sick for a week up to several weeks or even months sometimes after drinking alcohol. If i went out for a weekend and got drunk i'd be feeling the effects for weeks afterwards. It's not hangover symptoms that i get it's more like allergy symptoms. My face swells slightly, my sinuses get blocked and i become sensitive to heat, my eyes get puffy, i get rosacea-like symptoms on my face, i get bloated, i seem to get paler too, especially my hands. i get fatigue, trouble sleeping, brain fog, negative thoughts etc.. i get all these symptoms and it seems to be caused by alcohol? I don't know why alcohol could make me sick for weeks just by going out over the weekend. It really has me down in the dumps. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I'm thinking maybe histamine intolerance? But if that's the case then why is it mainly alcohol that gives me these symptoms? Does alcohol contain much higher levels of histamine than most other foods or drinks?

Hi healthiskey ,

Have you been able to schedule an appointment with your doctor to discuss the issue? Do you have a gluten intolerance (wheat, barley, etc.)? Alcoholic drinks are sometimes mixed with barley.

Please check out the Gluten Free Guerrillas group on HU. Go to:

Click on the follow group button and then post questions. I hope this helps.😀

I'm not sure if it's gluten or wheat since i can eat bread and stuff which i assume has more wheat and gluten in it?

Wheat/gluten reacts differently for each person. Please check with your doctor and set up an appointment soon.

You’re welcome! I don’t eat anything that has gluten/wheat in it since I have a gluten sensitivity and get cramps from eating wheat products.

Best avoid alcohol altogether if you have a reaction like that each time, What's fun for a few hours is clearly, no fun afterwards if you have an allergy.

As others have said, if alcohol causes bad reactions then stay clear. After all it is a poison and should be treated as such. If you can tolerate it, fine. But I think from what you have said, your body cannot so best to avoid - entirely.

These days I go for months without alcohol and never miss it. If I do have a drink it is just to keep people company and then I only have a glass. Am I less of a human being for avoiding alcohol? Well friends/family still tease me about my obscure sense of humour. I don't fall asleep half way through the evening anymore, and I feel healthier the next day.

I will be stopping alcohol for a long time at the very least anyways. I notice if i stay off of it for a very long time and live a healthy lifestyle i can eventually tolerate a bit of it. A few days of drinking definitely isn't worth weeks or months of sickness.

I'd start off by limiting how much you drink and stay away from anything premier, shorts, bottles etc. Drinking when you're tired, stressed or emotional will make it worse. So when you go out try resting first. then mix with the right people, not drinkers and stick to one place. If you can only drink with people you can trust not to make things worse. Then if all else fails, try a telephone helpline first if you are not ready for your doctor yet.

I know this post is like 8 months old. But I’m currently going through this. I had a hangover after the 4th of July. I threw up everything out my system that night. Was dizzy for 2 days. Nauseous on and off. Today marks 9 days since the 4th. I haven’t been right since. I’m weak, can’t be in the sun long, shortness of breath, can’t do much during the day without feeling tired right after. I have to take naps, I’ve never had to take naps. Digestive isn’t regular. Headaches!!! Every day... depressed, emotional! And horrible sinuses, coughing, flu like symptoms.... did you get any relief? What kinds of things did you do to help?! I want to feel normal again. Definitely staying away from alcohol! I just don’t understand. When I was younger I drank alcohol with no problem, was kind of the partier! Hopefully you can help me out!

Sometimes, a person’s ability to digest certain foods can change over time. What has your doctor told you, Mad_ran54 ?

Me too! Used to drink with the best of em when I was younger but now it seems to cause headaches and nausea for weeks after. What are your symptoms?

What’s wierder is if I have just one drink, the headaches etc start the day after next. If I have a few more, the headaches may not start for a week or so but then continue for weeks again??!
