Well I've been told by the doc today that my blood sugar level is borderline diabetic. I'm 61 and my mum was diabetic and all my aunts. Doctor said I need to cut out all sugar ( apart from fruit) I also need to lose about a stone. I'm gutted - I have got used to having cake n biscuits just at weekends as I started gaining weight in my 50's but I adore chocolate and the occasional glass of wine. It has to be done though as I'm looking forward to a long, pleasant retirement in 5 years so my health has to Hoping to come first. Hoping to pick up hints and tips from those in a similar situation.

Pre diabetic
Hi samnelisa . Have a lookat Michael Moseleys book the Blood sugar diet. It seems to have great results in reversing diabetes by following a low calorie low carb diet. There's also a website for it.
Exercise! 75% of strokes are in the over 50s. 80% strokes are avoidable through lifestyle changes. Key problems: blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and sedentary lifestyle . You’re overweight. You may be stressed.
Do lots of walking. Get vitamin D. If you do have wine, only a small glass otherwise stroke risk rockets! Make sure you stay hydrated. Improve sleep quality.
Eat less. Eat healthily. Your blood sugar level can vary from day to day. Get regular tests - groupin offer lipid profile etc for £79
Do yoga.

When I was diagnosed pre-diabetic I didn't think it would happen to me, despite my mum and sister being diabetic. So when I was finally diagnosed I had to take stock and make changes. You can pull this back by watching your carbs and added sugars.
I suggest you get onto the diabetes.org.uk website and check out their educational pages and also xperthealth.org.uk which is a great educational programme (I did their half a day a week for 6 weeks course) , you can self refer or ask your doctor to refer you if it is in your area.
When I was diagnosed 6 years ago I was 7.9 and now I'm back in the pre-diabetic range and working to get into non-diabetic (although once a diabetic you will always be a diabetic, just in very good control) range.
Good luck in getting back into the non-diabetic range

"Learn how to count carbs and eliminate carbs from diet - no more than 100 grams per day.
You can reduce slowly over three months ..."
Why over three months ?
Yes. Please post your profile here. Your height weight a1c etc which would help the people on this forum to give you correct advice.
Chocolate is not bad if without sugar. Good antioxidant. The brown one.
I'd not prefer taking alcohol.
No to cakes and biscuits. Made from refine flour.
Good luck.
My friend gave me the same news today, so I emailed these links that I'd posted a few days ago:
Thank you everyone for all the help and suggestions. I have cut out all the obvious suspects ie cake, biscuits, chocolate ( though was interested to hear a bit of very dark choc was ok) I need to educate myself on hidden sugars in processed foods eg baked beans and why I need to reduce carbs as doc didnt mention this.
I run a childcare business from my home so am very active and do alot of walking but am a bit stressed I never seem to stop
Thanks again I am feeling more positive.
Hi.
I'm a type 2 diet controlled diabetic and was diagnosed 2 years ago. Prior to diagnosis I was pre diabetic for just under a year. But, I was stupid as I didn't change my diet very much (apart from a period of about 3 months when told).
People think it's sugar but it's not just sugar, it's carbohydrates. I'd advise you to look at the carb count in foods. Veg is ok although most "root" veggies are higher in carbs so things like swede and parsnips are much higher than other veg. Also, cooking methods change carb values - a jacket potato is a lot higher than a few boiled potatoes.
Swop white rice for wholemeal or basmati and limit, if like me you love pasta! My hubby was also diagnosed as type 2 a few months after me and as a Pringles lover, horrified to find out just how, many carbs are in them - he's been known to eat a tube in one go - pops and doesn't stop! 😁
Dark chocolate is better than milk or the popular bars like Twirl, Crunchie etc. The higher the cocoa content, the lower the carbs. And red wine is usually much better than white 🍷
There are some good books (have a look on Amazon) - there's one that has photo's in it showing different portion sizes which for me was a bit of an eye opener as I think a lot of us out too much of certain things on our plates!
Hope this helps?
Thank you so much, knowing I could be diabetic within a year will make me stick at it. I know it will be hard Ive had a sweet tooth all my life but I want to stay healthy. Hope you continue to do well on diet control x
Its been 6 days now and I have had nothing with refined sugar, bread, potatoes, rice or pasta. Have been eating mainly chicken, eggs , lots of veg and fruits - apples, oranges, pears and a few grapes, mixed unsalted nuts and tonight a gin and slimline. Missing bread and crackers. Are there any crackers that are low carb? I dont feel hungry but will soon get bored so need ideas for meal bulkers to replace carbs . Thanks all
