Welcome to the Healthy Eating forum, Hidden - I don't know if you've seen the 'Healthy eating' pages from NHS Choices (which is connected to this forum), but a link is here as a good starting point:

nhs.uk/livewell/healthy-eat...

I feel sure people will give you some tips and pointers regarding your queries about diabetes and pre-diabetes as well.

Hopefully having the support of a forum means you'll stick to whatever goals you decide to go for. I know you said you can give up on things sometimes, but having support can really help.

Good luck,

Zest :-)

Hi Hidden ,

Welcome to the Healthy Eating group. Please feel free to continue to ask questions, post postings and comments, read and reply to other member's postings/comments, take the polls listed on the Polls Section, attend the monthly meetings, and of course, meet the rest of the group's members.

As for being pre-diabetic, you can (with your doctor's permission) start an exercise routine and how many days a week, count your carbs for each meal and/or snack, test your blood sugar every few hours (or when you feel like you might be getting low blood sugar) and don't skip or be late with meals. You can also take a look at the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation's website for the free leaflets that can be downloaded/read and/or listened to at anytime. Go to: drwf.org.uk/understanding-d...

You can also join both the DRWF group and Diabetes India (DI) on HU by clicking on the group(s) pages and follow the groups. Go to:

I hope this helps! :-)

Hi reglee

I've recently been diagnosed with diabetes type 2 and just completed the Desmond course which is for diabetes type 2 covering diet, how the body uses glucose (or not) and the long term health issues which can occur if high blood glucose is not controlled.

So for me I would rather control the blood glucose levels through diet and exercise rather than have to take the meds. Its difficult, I've managed to drop sweets and cakes but still have biscuits, trying to control that but not always successful.

The main thing to watch as already stated is the amount of carbohydrates at each meal. Its about 30 - 40 grams each meal but depends also on how active you are. The diabetic plate is a good thing to go by, that's quarter plate protein, quarter carbs and half veg.

Other things recommended is go for brown, whole grain bread, brown rice and brown pasta, the body takes longer to digest the carbs in brown grains which helps to keep the blood glucose levels lower and more stable.

Fats, for butters and spreads check out the ones that have the highest monounsaturated fats as these both lower bad cholesterol HDL and raise the good cholesterol LDL So far utterly butters is fairly high in monounsaturates and also rapeseed oil for cooking but check the labels ingredients.

Its also advised to avoid anything that is labelled for diabetics. The sugar free sweets are ok occasionally, but not recommended in large quantities.

I was 58 mmol, in about 6 weeks I am down to 55 mmol that was switching to brown grain pasta etc and cutting down on sweet treats. On the Desmond course the aim is to get the blood glucose down to 4 or less.

Hope you find some of this helpful.
