When I was at my mist vulnerable stressed time in labour with my first daughter it was a cleaner. She took my hand and stroked it and said to me never mind dear you’ll be all right dear think after each labour pain that’s one less to have! She was a jewel in a system that tended to be very judgemental in young pregnant girls. This was 40 years ago and attitudes have changed.Nurses maybe would do this today.
I have always looked at cleaners through a different lenses since then. When I have been hospitalised I’ve made a special point of thanking them for everything they do, often cleaners are viewed as the bottom of the pile but that cleaner was my angel and at the top of my pile.
